Great intro to a new author, other than the rushed last third of the tale which spoiled it a little. Could easily have been 5*

I've not read any of the other tales in this series, which wasn't an issue as I jumped straight into this one and quickly picked up who was who. I won't repeat the storyline as the blurb does this pretty well, but I liked that it didn't have the trope-ystuff that's so often found in GFY tales. I thought that Ian/Killian's concerns and skittishness were realistic and the tale worked, BUT, the author rushed the last third.
After Ian panicked and cheated, and Alex went off on bodyguard duty, the tale raced to a finish. The cheating wasn't talked out, nor was Alex's time away or Ian's display of jealousy. The grandmother that Ian miraculously found made an appearance but was never heard from again. Suddenly, the tale was 4 years into the future with everything conveniently wrapping up, and though there were mentions of a few bumps in the road that had been overcome, as well as a wedding (with sudden, unexplained mention that 'always the romantic. Ian...' err, no, he wasn't, not that I read, anyway), that tale ended.
This could very easily have been a 5* read if the author hadn't rushed and had explained what happened to Kyle once he turned 18, how their second kid came about, what bumps there were, and giving a recap of where the other characters were now, given that this was the final book in the series.

I received an ARC for an honest review. It doesnt get much better than this in the GFY world!! I fell hard for the MCs in this story. The plot was so heartfelt, and the grief felt so real. I laughed and cried throughout all of it. It was moving, and sweet, but the sex was white hot!! wish i could give this more than 5 stars, because this book was an amazing read. GFY is definitely one of my fav reads, add in friends to lovers with that, and in my opinion it couldnt be better. This found its way into my reread folder the minute i finished it.

Beautiful M/M Romance!

ALEX is the fourth and final book in S. M. Shade’s Striking Back series. I have to admit that it is the first book I have read from this series – but with it being an m/m story I had had to jump at the chance of reading it, and I am really glad I did! Alex’ story is beautifully written and full of joy, tears and unexpected little twists and turns.
After Alex’ life crashed to a halt after his boyfriend Cooper died, he moved in with his best friend Ian to come to terms with this situation until he is able to stand on his own two feet again. Ian – along with Alex’ family – is there for him when he needed him the most, and Alex cannot deny that he stars feeling more than just friendship for his absolutely straight friend whose bed is warmed by a different girl every night.
But when tragedy strikes again – this time with Ian in its fire line –, it is Alex who now helps him through difficult times and Ian has to realize that there might be more to his feelings for Alex than he ever thought possible…
If the story of those two men helping each other through their darkest days and discovering their feelings for each other – one of them even thinking he was straight as can be before – was not beautiful enough itself, it pulls even more heartstrings when Alex meets and helps Kyle – a teenage boy coming from an awful family situation. This book is definitely a tear-jerker for me – as much in good as in bad things too.
Also, it goes exactly at the right speed and makes both their journeys – Alex grieving and recovering from his loss of Cooper and Ian realizing and accepting he has feelings for a man – absolutely believable.
So maybe I am repeating myself here, but I cannot emphasize enough how beautiful this story is! Go ahead and pick it up!
I myself will definitely be going back and reading the other 3 books of this series which unbelievably I have missed out on until now!
