About the Author
Reinier Gerritsen has been photographing figures in the public sphere for over twenty years now. In 1992, he was awarded the prestigious Rijksmuseum assignment with Luuk Kramer, which resulted in a book and exhibition at Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. Beginning in 2005, he traveled to twenty-five countries to create the ambitious documentary project The Europeans. His previous monographs include Blinde verrassing (1993), the award-winning Matti (2002), and Wall Street Stop (2010). He is represented by Julie Saul Gallery, New York. Boris Kachka is a Brooklyn-based author who writes about books, publishing, and culture. He is a contributing editor at New York magazine and author of the widely reviewed and praised Hothouse: The Art of Survival and the Survival of Art at America’s Most Celebrated Publishing House, Farrar, Straus and Giroux (2013).

'What are you reading?'

Whenever I see someone reading a book in public I have an overwhelming urge to know what it is, craning to get a look at author and title whilst trying not too seem too nosy. "The Last Book" allows me to indulge this curiosity at leisure, consisting as it does of photographs of people reading on the New York Subway. The photographs, which date from 2011, are mainly black and white, interspersed with three sections of colour plates.

These photographs are arranged alphabetically by author, so you get runs of particular authors such as Suzanne Collins, E. L. James, Junot Díaz, and Gore Vidal. This ordering also allows for some pleasing juxtapositions such as "Choose to Lose: the 7-day Carb Cycle Solution" coming straight after a battered Loeb of Pindar's poems. You can't help comparing book and reader, seeing whether the combination accords with your preconceptions and prejudices or confounds them. You get the urge to create your own stories about, for example, the woman reading "When Things Fall Apart: Heart Advice for Difficult Times", the burly man with a Jane Austen novel, and the woman whose face is lit up by Deborah Eisenberg.

I read this book with a massive smile on my face throughout, imagining the spaces these readers had carved for themselves among the crowds of the subway and feeling uplifted by the wide variety of books. On the evidence of this work, the written word and the pursuit of knowledge is very much alive and kicking.

A timely contribution to nanotechnology literature.

Once again Robert A. Freitas, Jr. has turned out a remarkable volume of information (similar to Nanomedicine Volume 1). It is probably useful to have read Nanomedicine Volume 1 before reading Volume IIA, but Volume IIA can be read on its own particularly if one has a biological or medical education. Its emphasis is on whether we can expect nanotechnology based devices to be able to operate within the human body but it also deals with whether or not certain aspects of nanotechnology might be dangerous to biological life in general. I thought the aspects of the book that identified the areas where we lack knowledge at this time to be particularly useful. They pointed out topics that still need to be researched. The book is excellent in suggesting solutions for problems we can anticipate at this time in the area of biocompatibility.
This work is particularly timely because groups such as the ETC Group and Greenpeace have recently released reports that might reflect negatively on nanotechnology. This book provides a partial basis for informed debate on the risks vs. the benefits of nanotechnology. Since medical applications of nanotechnology may save 10's of millions of lives annually -- arguing against it requires very strong arguments. Anyone who has not read this book and attempts to criticize the development of nanotechnology for biological applications can probably be considered poorly informed.
The only criticism that I might list is that the publication may have been somewhat accelerated, perhaps in response to rising criticisms by luddites with respect to nanotechnology, and as a result very interesting information that was intended to be in Volume II, may only appear in Volume IIB. (So I'd perhaps only give the work 4.5 stars due to disappointment over not having more information included -- though if IIA and what I anticipate will be in IIB were combined it would be a very large book).

Technically sound, but editorially not honest

As a biologist currently employed as Group Product Manager in a leading pharma/biotech company (top 5 worldwide), I'm interested in progressive developments of nanotechnology applications to medicine.

As such, I purchased both volumes of Nanomedicine of R. Freitas.

The second volume presents itself as a tiny book, whose size could have easily been included in the volume 1. Since I paid each book $ 99, I ask myself whether it was so impossible making it of only one volume.

Deception grows when opening the book.

Half of it is a list of all references cited in the text.

Roughly 150 out of 330 pages are what effectively is involved in Nanomedicine biocompatibility.

Fortunately, the 150 pages left are worthwhile and interesting (and this deserves the 3 stars), but editorial politics is really upsetting.

Darvill (archaeology, Bournemouth Univ.), the author of numerous journal articles and books on ancient Britain, has compiled a useful ready-reference archaeological resource with more than 4000 entries arranged alphabetically and coded by type, e.g., artifact; biographical; cultural phase or period; deity; document; equipment; general term; legal term; material; monument class or category; site, monument, or area of archaeological importance; and technique. This wealth of authoritative information written for the general reader is supplemented with appendixes featuring a list of principal international conventions for the preservation of archaeological and historic sites and artifacts, 1954-93; time lines for the Americas; a chronology of the British Bronze Age; Egyptian dynasties; Roman emperors; and rulers of England to 1066. The form and content are most similar to the out-of-print Facts On File Dictionary of Archaeology (1988), edited by R.D. Whitehouse, but missing its useful subject index, extensive bibliography, and excellent crossreferencing; for instance, Darvill does not refer the user from Hissarlik to Troy, Hattusas to Boghazkoy, or Xi'an to Chang'an. Biographical entries for British monarchs of the 18th and 19th centuries are included while omitting Khufu, Thutmose III, and Hammurabi. Important sites like Abydos, Ebla, and Ugarit are missing. This is an ambitious work with some flaws. Darvill (professor of archaeology at Bournemouth University, U.K.) has undertaken a survey of the vocabulary of archaeology in "Europe, the Mediterranean, and English-speaking countries in which archaeology has become an established academic and vocational subject." The work is intended for students, journalists, "and other professionals who have cause to dip into the archaeological literature."

More than 4,000 definitions range from a couple of lines to a two-column page, with most being quite short. Famous archaeologists have brief biographies, usually taken from obituaries or autobiographies, which are noted. Sources, including excavation reports, are also provided for entries on sites. The "Quick Reference Section" at the back of the book contains lists of international archaeological conventions and recommendations; charts of stratigraphic subdivisions in Europe and North America; cultural periods in North America, Mesoamerica, and South America; and lists of Egyptian, Roman, and British rulers.

We found a number of small errors. Flavius Aetius, who defeated Attila, is called Flavours Aetius. Robert Koldewey, who excavated Babylon, is misspelled Koldeway. The Roman poet Martial is listed as Martial, Marcus Valerius, when his full name is Marcus Valerius Martialis. An entry on the Marcomanni says that they annexed Bavaria "in the 6th century BC," instead of in the sixth century A.D.

The Oxford Companion to Archaeology (1996) is a good choice for libraries wanting a more comprehensive, encyclopedic approach. Although it is weakened by some careless mistakes, The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Archaeology is suitable for larger public and academic libraries that need a dictionary of archaeological terms.
