From School Library Journal
Grade 3–6—Fifth-grader Ben Moroney has just moved from Arizona to Massachusetts. While struggling to adjust to his new home, he becomes unlikely friends with his science teacher, Mrs. Tibbets. She introduces the young nature enthusiast to the wildlife inhabiting her rural property, including the fascinating, rarely seen spadefoot toad. Despite his initial loyalty to his previous home, Ben finds himself increasingly interested in his new environment, and when he learns that the spadefoot toad's habitat will soon be sold to developers, he makes it his mission to save the threatened species he has grown to love. This title does not contain the same level of mystery, action, and suspense as Carl Hiassen's Hoot (Knopf, 2002), but the narrative does move along at a quick enough pace to keep the book interesting, and the main character is a well-developed, realistic "child hero." An additional purchase with a positive message that may appeal to readers interested in science and nature.—Melinda Piehler, Sawgrass Elementary School, Sunrise, FL

nature lovers and new kids
By csheffie
This book's not just for kids interested in nature or animals. There are also motifs of the new kid in school and the kid who knows what he likes but struggles with how other children will see him - and must decide what's more important: interests or reputation. These are struggles all kids can benefit from reading about.

It is also nice to find a book for kids where the environment is shown as important but also wondrous. I saw a lot of my nephews and their love for nature in the main character. Without being preachy, this book points out that all animals are part of the web of life, no matter how small. I am so happy this author is writing such things for kids!

The author also does not talk down to children. The main character is observant, thinks deeply, and has serious concerns in addition to the "normal" kid things like arguing with his sister. The author also includes a list of additional resources for readers who want to learn more.

I might as well add that as a girl who was/is just a little different, my favorite line is the main character saying his friend is a "smart girl who's not smart in the way that she never gets in trouble in school but smart like she's got her head tilted and looks at the world in a different way." That line is not trite, a nice thing to say (in my opinion!), and fits so many girls I know. Since it's a child noticing this, it's also an instance where the author is not talking down to kids.

If you know a kid who likes animals, wants to learn about different ecosystems in the US, or is suddenly the new kid in school, I recommend you share this book with them.

What do you know about the Endangered Species List?
By Amazon Customer
Ben is having a hard time adjusting to the move from Tucson, Arizona to Edenboro, Massachusetts. He misses his best friend and the pet lizard he left with his friend. On top of that some of his treasured things he had carefully packed away for transport did not make it to his new home. Yep, it was lost in transport. So Ben is not a happy camper!

Ben has been attending his new school for about two months and still hasn't made any real friends. Plus there is an annoying loud mouth bully that he tries real hard to stay out of that guys radar.

His geography teacher has given the class a project to do about habitats and he has chosen Arizona because he knows all about the different habitats and creatures in the Tucson area deserts.

His science teacher, Mrs Tibbets turns out to be pretty cool for a really old teacher. Come to find out she is very interested in nature especially that of the wooded area between her house and Ben's house. She hired been to do some yard work for her and afterwards they explored the woods behind her house. She told him of one special place in particular and that was a vernal pond where an endangered species called the spadefoot toads came to lay and fertilize their eggs. This is the only time they came out from underground. A very rare occurrence. The only problem is she is being forced to sell her property which will result in destroying the habit of not only the spadefoot toads but that of many other creatures.

Can Ben do anything to stop this destruction? After all he is only a fifth grader. What will happen to the spadefoot toads? It's not like they can pack up and move somewhere else.

It is so refreshing reading about this little guy that has so much passion about saving this habitat. The author is not just an amazing story teller he has written a tale about a legitimate cause. Have you every really looked into how many creatures are ending up on the endangered species list? It is so sad!

So kudos to the author for bringing this to the attention of our children in this wonderful story about Ben, Mrs. Tibbets and the Night of the Spadefoot Toads. The author provides many references on his website to follow up on after reading this book.

Once You Start Reading You Won’t Let Go!

I just finished reading Night of the Spadefoot Toads by Bill Harley. This is a book that will knock you off your feet! I love this book so much I could read it a hundred times. This book is mostly about the main character Ben and how he does everything he can to save the spadefoots, while getting a hang of his new home, Massachusetts.
One reason I love this book is because of the tension and drama. The main character Ben, faces a lot of challenges, especially, since he just moved from Tucson,Arizona to Massachusetts. Frankie, a bully, has a conflictual relationship with Ben. But surprisingly, I think Frankie’s actions boosted Ben’s confidence. Also, fitting in at a new school is something I’ve experienced. Trust me it’s hard. And that’s just the beginning.
Another reason why I love this book is because of how Bill Harley gives a good rising action.Throughout the book, Ben gets overwhelmed with all the issues, conflicts and challenges he faces. I was really shocked when Ben’s best friend, Toby, hung out with Larry (jerk). If it wasn’t enough, Lenny the lizard died. Because of this, I’m starting to think that because Toby hung out with Larry too much Lenny died. Will Ben be able to finish his report despite dealing with all these problems?
My last and favorite reason is how Ben develops a strong relationship with Ms.Tibbets, his science teacher. Bill Harley sure knows how to write a good book! The relationship starts when Ben and Ms. Tibbets went to the vernal pool and saw the spadefoots (which are endangered). There they seem really close. But what really touched me was how Ben stepped in to help Ms. Tibbets with her big problem (which you’ll see if you choose to purchase this book) and never gave up. Will Tabitha (Ms.Tibbets’ sister) change her mind?
Over all, the friendship, loyalty and compassion in this book will change your life. I should know, it changed mine. Just how Ben stepped in to help Ms. Tibbets with her big problem and never gave up shows it all. Also, the fact that Ben worked so hard and never gave up shows how loyal and considerate he is. All you readers out there who need a good book filled with tension and drama, I recommend this book to you. I made the right choice you should too. P.S. you might cry in some parts, so prepare a box of tissue. - T.W. - 5th grader
