Chief Bucket-Filler

What if every person on your team had a Monday Morning management mentor for the next eight Mondays? That's the idea in this book--and in less than 100 pages, David Cottrell, a management consultant shows you how to do it.

In this brief review, I must first mention the topic for Monday Morning #7, "Buckets and Dippers," because it fits so well with my book, Mastering The Management Buckets: 20 Critical Competencies for Leading Your Business or Non-profit. The mentor says, "As a leader your job is to keep everyone's bucket filled. You are the Chief Bucket-Filler, and the best way to fill buckets is with excellent communication."

He describes four To-Do's to keep your team members' motivation buckets full: 1) Know the main things; 2) Give feedback on performance; 3) Provide recognition; and 4) Communicate the team score. He lists a dozen ways you can show team members you care about them, and he punctuates the 12 one-liners not with bullet points, but with buckets. (I really like this author.) Example: "Follow the platinum bucket-filling rule: Treat people the way they wish to be treated. And, "Keep a camera close by to record significant bucket-filling events."

The author warns that "people quit people before they quit companies." Think of a previous job you held at another company or organization. Does a "Chief Bucket-Filler" come to mind? What did he or she do that was memorable?

You'll have to read the book to get his answers, but...for now, guess what David Cottrell's three rules in hiring are? What are your rules? Do your managers have thoughtful hiring rules?

The eight Monday morning topics--written in story form with a mentor and a manager--focus on many of the Management 101 essentials: hire tough, do less or work faster, live in the learning zone (read 10 minutes a day) and more. Maybe your best inspiration from this book is just...do it! Use Cottrell's book (eight Monday mornings) or mine (20 mornings), but...do it. Mentor your managers.

This book is clear, crisp and hits the critical success factors for effective managers and leaders. The author uses powerful anecdotes to get his message across. This short book can be read inside of a few hours and should be on the required reading list for all new managers (and those needing a refresher). The chapter titles and key messages can be found below:

1) Drivers and Passengers (accept total responsibility for results w/o excuses; be a leader rather than a follower)

2) Keep the Main Thing The Main Thing (Focus on few critical needs and be certain everyone knows them)

3) Escape From Management Land (Get and stay close to your top people and help your best improve)

4) The "Do Right Rule" (Act with integrity)

5) Hire tough (Only hire and retain top performers)

6) Do Less or Work Faster (Manage time carefully by being more efficient at what you do)

7) Buckets and Dippers (Respect, recognize and cheer on your people)

8) Enter the Learning Zone (Continuous learning through reading, listening, trying new approaches, helping others)

Everyone should read this book. If you are in a position of leadership, are developing your leadership skills or just want to work for a good leader then this book is for you. A forgotten piece of good quality instruction. Easy read, simple chapters, it covers all the important factors. I re-read it several times and still use it for reference.

Generally a Good HRM Textbook

I am using this text for a graduate class in HRM that I am teaching. Generally, the materials are well presented. However, like most HR texts, it is woefully lacking in HR strategy and I find myself expanding in this area. In addition, it refers to the HR triad as line managers, HR and employees. What happened to the alignment with senior management or strategy itself? I realize the authors have used this concept for years, but I am concerned that the continued use of the concept in an HR survey course (where for some students, this is the only HR class they take), reinforces the incorrect notion that HR belongs nowhere near the top of the organization.

A Good HRM Material

I have read this book at graduate level as a class material in Human Resource Management. The most obvious priority of Schulers book is its case studies which are developed elaborately and absolutely topic-related. It was my assignment to translate case studies included in this book into Turkish and while I was reading cases, I realized that as I read, I better understood topics. Although cases are impressive in this book, the chapter titled as "The Role of HRM Department in Total Quality Management Process" is not rich in terms of content.
I reccommend this book especially to international students whose English proficiency level is not very high because the language and structure of Schulers book is very simple, accordingly understandable. A good source in the field of HRM. Highly reccommended.

This book was selected by our textbook committee. It is satisfactory,but lacks sufficient HR depth. You would want to supplement your knowledge with articles and online topics.

A great book
By Be the Change You Wish to See
This is a great book. I used it when I was in residency. I am now a practicing psychiatrist. I can still, even to this day, see how this book has shaped my clinical interviewing in a positive way. It is practical, it takes the theory and gives you examples of how to phrase things. It has mneumonics that help you remember all of the different parts of the interview. it enables you to do a pretty complete diagnositic interview when you need to. I remember getting compliments from my supervisors after they observed my interview when I started using these methods. It is a great book to get when you are wondering about how to get started when you first begin conducting interviews.

This book is required reading for me in a psychiatric nurse practitioner program. This book has great ideas for learning diagnostic criteria and for eliciting information from our patients. It is also well-written and pleasant to read.

A must for any new parent. Especially those who have been shy with babies and children in the past.

Before I had my twin daughters, I have to admit I was not the type of guy who was naturally drawn to babies/ children and tended to avoid them. When people did make me interact with their children, I would just stare at them with a nervous half smile and say "uuhhh..... whats up?". Needless to say no baby or child were impressed with my presence. This was never an issue till my daughters arrived. I loved them so much and yet was not sure how to interact with them and what they can perceive at their ages. This book was perfect. It's filled with games in order of age (by month) so you know if its appropriate for their child. It's clearly written and has photos which explains the games better. Best of all it mentions how each game is beneficial for your child such as sensory, strength and bonding. I now have a number of games that I play with my daughters, it has made my time with them so much more precious.

Hm... Am I missing something? This book doesn't tell you anything you already know from common sense. Dangle things in front of the baby, make noises, hold them and lift them, give them stimulating toys, etc. Returning mine.

Inexperienced Mom's Idea Guide

Okay, I'm a first time mom and only child so I have never had the experience of working with newborns and young infants for an extended period of time. Many reviews said that this book is filled with common sense actions/items, and for those who have siblings or previous experience with newborns, I can see how it would be. For me, on the other hand, it is filled with ideas on how to help my baby develop in ways that I probably would not have imagined. Sure, one or two of the moves you will already know, but many of the other ones you may not have thought of. If you plan on spending lots of time around your baby and are looking for ways to keep him/her entertained (and yourself, let's face it), then this book is for you. What's even better is that with the exception of one or two smaller objects, the vast majority of the book can be conducted without purchasing any toys. It's just you, your baby, and a prop or two you already have around the house.

I am a raving fan of Roger von Oech's creative work as embodied in his books & card decks, namely:

Books:

- A Whack on the Side of the Head;
- A Kick in the Seat of the Pants;
- Expect the Unexpected;

Card Decks:

- Creative Whack Pack;
- Innovative Whack Pack;
- Ancient Whacks of Heraclitus;

I have used all his creativity stuff ever since I started my own strategy consulting (& book store) business in late 1991.

From my personal & professional experience, I would like to say that the entire collection of Roger von Oech's creative work has been designed to serve three strategic purposes:

- understanding - & removing - your mental blocks;
- breaking your habitual patterns;
- shifting your focus & changing your paradigms;

As a matter of fact, once you appreciate & commit to these three strategic purposes in your life, you will soon realise that there is nothing in this world to stop you from getting rid of old ideas & getting new & fresh ideas.

Allow me to quote Edward de Bono: "...the mind is habitually uncreative - it is usually preoccupied with organising masses of incoming data into convenient patterns. Once this pattern is established, then the mind tends to rely upon that pattern in future situations, in order to facilitate decision making & action in an otherwise complex world..." (The Use of Lateral Thinking).

Breaking old habitual patterns is definitely the first & foremost priority in your journey to creativity!

Once your shift your focus, you begin to change your paradigms or the way you look at the world around you. Always remember this: Your brain follows the direction of your dominant thought. Once you focus on something, that thing becomes the foreground. Everything else around it will fall into the background. Most opportunties are unfortunately hidden in the background. The moment you begin to shift your focus, you are pushing the 'foreground' into the 'background', & pulling the 'background' into the 'foreground'. Get it?

I think everyone should have a pack of this cards because everyone sometimes feels stuck with a problem to the point that he is unaware of other possible solutions. The ideas in this pack help to look at the perplexing issue from many different perspectives. Sooner or later one may see the light, an open door, most likely many, many doors leading to numerous possible solutions. These cards are a valuable tool for brainstorming ideas, prompting the person to think of ideas that might have never crossed his mind otherwise. The wonderful think about coming out with creative ideas is that you also have lots of laughs while you're doing it because you begin to think of wild, whacky and outrageously fun things.
