Caveat lector: ADULT reading!

This collection of short stories by Diana Ferraro is what I would consider adult reading. By that, I don’t mean to suggest that the material is pornographic or in any way unsuitable for children’s eyes. But rather, that THE MAP OF SOLITUDE is clearly written from an adult perspective and—at least to my way of thinking—can be appreciated only by someone with adult sensibilities.
You won’t find any sorcerers or vampires in these stories—except as they might occur symbolically. What you will find is everyday adult humans behaving in everyday adult human ways: ageing; eating and drinking too much; cheating; lying; stealing; dreaming and scheming; sometimes loving—though often tragically; and usually ending up in that condition most of us know all too well: solitude; aloneness; the state of being alone and lonely.
Edward Hopper’s art came to mind over and over again as I read Ms. Ferraro’s stories. But so did the Grimm Brothers’ and H. C. Andersen’s fairy tales—one of which (“The Little Mermaid”) Ms. Ferraro brilliantly uses to illustrate her final story in this collection, “Daughter of the Air.” I suspect if she were to sell it here as a stand-alone at a mere 99� for the privilege, it would make her quite wealthy. Yes, it’s that good!
Although at home in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Ms. Ferraro has traveled extensively in Europe and here in the U. S.—and her stories consequently take place as much in London, Paris and Madrid, and in Boston, New York, Richmond and Miami, as they do in Buenos Aires. The “pique” (or at least ‘piquant’) of her stories consequently derives from a heady combination of European starters/ap�ritifs/tapas, stateside meat and potatoes, and Argentine salsa.
Ms. Ferraro is first and foremost a story-teller. That’s not to say that she’s entirely devoid of style, but that she uses her style sparingly—and only to embellish a thought, gesture, mood or snippet of dialogue when one of these bows to enhancement.
Are there sometimes errors in syntax, punctuation and even vocabulary? Of course there are! But who among us could write in a language not natively our own and do so with such command? In any case, Ms. Ferraro’s syntactical or orthographic errors really never get in the way of a thorough understanding of her art.
Provided, that is, one has an adult’s understanding and sensibility. If not, you’d do better to spend your hard-earned dollars, yen or euros on some liter fare.

An intriguing, sophisticated collection.

Diana Ferraro’s collection, The Map of Solitude, takes the reader on a world tour of Latin America, Europe and the U.S. The narrators live in diverse cities including Buenos Aires, Miami, Boston, and Paris. They strive to connect and find meaningful relationships, yet in the end remain alone.
Dark-skinned Latinas get involved with American blue-eyed blonds, both fascinated by their differences, yet unable to overcome them. There are writers and artists, maids and spies, opera singers and journalists. Educated and not, sophisticated and na�ve, all bound together by their common humanity.
I was most struck by Ms. Ferraro’s honest depiction of human relationships, filled with excitement and despair, self-delusion and hope. What makes this collection even more interesting is the exposure to the real differences that exist between cultures, places and people. All of the stories are excellent. The title story in particular lingered in my mind. Malita and The True Story of Tango, available as a Kindle single, is a deep and intense exploration of Argentine culture. The last story, Daughter of the Air, is beautiful and provides the perfect end to this reading experience.
Ms. Ferraro lives in Buenos Aires, but her stories are universal and meant for the world. I highly recommend this wonderful book.

Definitely Recommended.

A good read, full of interesting characters, most of them female and South American and memorable. Ferraro is a good story-teller who understands her characters so well they give a sense of depths beyond their present words and actions, as if they were people I have known long before I picked up this book and discovered them. That's good writing.
The stories are set both in the US and in South America, and the characters are matched accordingly, though the plots range from academia to murder to tango lessons to international spy craft. But plot never takes precedent to character. These are not genre stories. Neither do they reek of the cookie-cutter banality of the creative-writing class. The best of them plumb the female heart in ways few contemporary writers do, the "female" heart being of course just another word for the "human" one.
I look forward to reading more of this writer's work.
