Multidisciplinary Overview Confirming the Straight-forward Interpretation of the Creation Account in Genesis

This book discusses the various theological interpretations of the Biblical account of creation along with comprehensive scientific review of evolutionary assumptions and interpretations, explaining the contradictions within macro-evolutionary ideas. It presents with clear and logical scientific support, the evidence that confirms the literal Genesis creation account supporting a young universe and earth. It details macro-evolutionary theories in the various scientific disciplines and shows the contradictions with the evidence, forcing the need to create stories and rely on unfounded, often knowingly false assumptions in an attempt to make the evolutionary story seem remotely plausible. The scientists discuss the evidence and show how it is consistent with Genesis in detail, readily understood by educated lay person. It explains the difference in operational versus forensic science, the impact of Noah's flood on the earth and how it created the fossil record, DNA, irreducible complexity of living organisms, geological dating issues, astrophysics evidence of young universe to include distant starlight explained, among many more evidences. A great book to start/add to your research into creation science and add to your library of knowledge to defend the Christian faith.

Excellent introduction to creationism.

Lots of information on a variety of subjects. This book doesn't go into deep detail on every issue of the Creation/Evolution debate, but it's an excellent introduction.
Evolutionists tend to confuse observations with inferences. Nobody has observed humans coming from ape-like creatures millions of years ago. It is, at best, an inference. Of course, creationists haven't observed the resurrection. We all have convictions in things unseen (Hebrews 11).
Overall, a very good, dense, summary of Creation basics. Looking forward to reading creationist literature that goes more in depth on these topics.

Caveat lector: ADULT reading!

This collection of short stories by Diana Ferraro is what I would consider adult reading. By that, I don’t mean to suggest that the material is pornographic or in any way unsuitable for children’s eyes. But rather, that THE MAP OF SOLITUDE is clearly written from an adult perspective and—at least to my way of thinking—can be appreciated only by someone with adult sensibilities.

You won’t find any sorcerers or vampires in these stories—except as they might occur symbolically. What you will find is everyday adult humans behaving in everyday adult human ways: ageing; eating and drinking too much; cheating; lying; stealing; dreaming and scheming; sometimes loving—though often tragically; and usually ending up in that condition most of us know all too well: solitude; aloneness; the state of being alone and lonely.

Edward Hopper’s art came to mind over and over again as I read Ms. Ferraro’s stories. But so did the Grimm Brothers’ and H. C. Andersen’s fairy tales—one of which (“The Little Mermaid”) Ms. Ferraro brilliantly uses to illustrate her final story in this collection, “Daughter of the Air.” I suspect if she were to sell it here as a stand-alone at a mere 99� for the privilege, it would make her quite wealthy. Yes, it’s that good!

Although at home in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Ms. Ferraro has traveled extensively in Europe and here in the U. S.—and her stories consequently take place as much in London, Paris and Madrid, and in Boston, New York, Richmond and Miami, as they do in Buenos Aires. The “pique” (or at least ‘piquant’) of her stories consequently derives from a heady combination of European starters/ap�ritifs/tapas, stateside meat and potatoes, and Argentine salsa.

Ms. Ferraro is first and foremost a story-teller. That’s not to say that she’s entirely devoid of style, but that she uses her style sparingly—and only to embellish a thought, gesture, mood or snippet of dialogue when one of these bows to enhancement.
Are there sometimes errors in syntax, punctuation and even vocabulary? Of course there are! But who among us could write in a language not natively our own and do so with such command? In any case, Ms. Ferraro’s syntactical or orthographic errors really never get in the way of a thorough understanding of her art.

Provided, that is, one has an adult’s understanding and sensibility. If not, you’d do better to spend your hard-earned dollars, yen or euros on some liter fare.

An intriguing, sophisticated collection.

Diana Ferraro’s collection, The Map of Solitude, takes the reader on a world tour of Latin America, Europe and the U.S. The narrators live in diverse cities including Buenos Aires, Miami, Boston, and Paris. They strive to connect and find meaningful relationships, yet in the end remain alone.

Dark-skinned Latinas get involved with American blue-eyed blonds, both fascinated by their differences, yet unable to overcome them. There are writers and artists, maids and spies, opera singers and journalists. Educated and not, sophisticated and na�ve, all bound together by their common humanity.

I was most struck by Ms. Ferraro’s honest depiction of human relationships, filled with excitement and despair, self-delusion and hope. What makes this collection even more interesting is the exposure to the real differences that exist between cultures, places and people. All of the stories are excellent. The title story in particular lingered in my mind. Malita and The True Story of Tango, available as a Kindle single, is a deep and intense exploration of Argentine culture. The last story, Daughter of the Air, is beautiful and provides the perfect end to this reading experience.

Ms. Ferraro lives in Buenos Aires, but her stories are universal and meant for the world. I highly recommend this wonderful book.

Definitely Recommended.

A good read, full of interesting characters, most of them female and South American and memorable. Ferraro is a good story-teller who understands her characters so well they give a sense of depths beyond their present words and actions, as if they were people I have known long before I picked up this book and discovered them. That's good writing.

The stories are set both in the US and in South America, and the characters are matched accordingly, though the plots range from academia to murder to tango lessons to international spy craft. But plot never takes precedent to character. These are not genre stories. Neither do they reek of the cookie-cutter banality of the creative-writing class. The best of them plumb the female heart in ways few contemporary writers do, the "female" heart being of course just another word for the "human" one.

I look forward to reading more of this writer's work.

If you want to understand the practice of Asatru this book as well as the first volume are where you want to begin. I read a bunch of other books on Asatru before reading Our Troth. I would recommend skipping to Out Troth.

I just want to make a comment on that Pedophile review. The guys off his rocker. But don't just take my word for it, buy the book and decide for yourself. I could see pedophiles being attracted to Christianity because the religion is full of patriarchal authorities that can easily abuse the trust placed in them to commit crimes. Asatru is not setup in this manner and so they would not benefit from coming to Asatru. There is no acceptance of pedophilia in Asatru. Members of this faith also have a more severe outlook on betrayal than Christianity.

If you have acquainted yourself with the lore, the gods, the Nine Realms, etc. but don't know where to go from there, "Living the Troth" is a good resource for developing practice. It discusses major heathen rites, rituals and holy tides in detail.

A lot of the information is geared towards developing group practice but even if you are solitary, the information will still be useful to you. And if you are so inclined, "Living the Troth" gives you the essential information needed for organizing your own kindred!

About the Author
Maxine Baca Zinn is professor emerita in the Department of Sociology at Michigan State University. She received her Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Oregon. Her books include: Women of Color in U.S. Society (with Bonnie Thornton Dill) and Gender Through the Prism of Difference (with Pierrette Hondagneu-Sotelo and Michael Messner). She is the coauthor (with D. Stanley Eitzen) of Social Problems and Diversity in Families–both of which won McGuffey Awards for excellence over multiple editions from the Text and Academic Authors Association–and Globalization: The Transformation of Social Worlds. She has served as president of the Western Social Science Association. In 2000, she received the American Sociological Association's Jessie Bernard Award for expanding the horizons of sociology to include the study of women.

D. Stanley Eitzen is professor emeritus in sociology from Colorado State University, where previously he was the John N. Stern Distinguished Professor. He recieved his Ph.D. from the University of Kansas. Among his books are Social Problems, which was awarded the McGuffey Longevity Award for excellence over multiple editions in 2000 by the Text and Academic Authors Association, and Diversity in Families (both co-authored with Maxine Baca Zinn); Solutions to Social Problems: Lessons from Other Societies (with Graig S. Leeham); Paths to Homelessness: Extreme Poverty and the Urban Housing Crisis (with Doug A. Timmer and Kathryn Talley); Sociology of North American Sport (with George H. Sage); and Fair and Foul: Rethinking the Myths and Paradoxes of Sport. He has served as the president of the North American Society for the Sociology of Sport and as editor of The Social Science Journal.

Barbara Wells is associate professor of sociology at Maryville College, where she is also chair of the Division of Social Sciences. She received her Ph.D. from Michigan State University. She is co-author of Diversity in Families (with Maxine Baca Zinn and D. Stanley Eitzen). Her research and publishing has centered on marriage, rural families, structural transformation and family life, and Latino families. She is presently working on a book manuscript on the work and family lives of Mexican American women who are daughters and granddaughters of immigrant farm workers.

About the Author

Maulik S. Joshi, DrPH, is president of the Health Research & Educational Trust (HRET) and senior vice president of research at the American Hospital Association (AHA). Dr. Joshi also oversees AHA s Institute for Diversity in Health Management and the Association for Community Health Improvement. Previously, Dr. Joshi served as senior advisor at the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality; president and CEO of the Delmarva Foundation, which was an organizational recipient of the 2005 US Senate Productivity Award (based on the Malcolm Baldrige Award); vice president at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement; senior director of quality for the University of Pennsylvania Health System; and executive vice president of The HMO Group. Dr. Joshi is editor-in-chief of the Journal for Healthcare Quality.

Elizabeth Ransom, MD, FACS, is executive vice president and clinical leader for the north zone of Texas Health Resources. She and the north zone operations leader are responsible for improving the health and well-being of the citizens of the North Texas Region. Prior to this role, Dr. Ransom served as chief quality officer at Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Southwest Fort Worth, where she was responsible for the quality improvement and safety program in addition to oversight of medical staff affairs, pharmacy, patient safety and risk management, laboratory services, case management, and the environment of care.

David Nash, MD, is the founding dean of the Jefferson School of Population Health. This appointment caps a 20-year tenure on the faculty of Thomas Jefferson University, where Dr. Nash is the Dr. Raymond C. and Doris N. Grandon Professor of Health Policy. He has been repeatedly named to Modern Healthcare s list of Most Powerful Persons in Healthcare. He is on the VHA Center for Applied Healthcare Studies advisory board, and he is a member of the board of directors of The Care Continuum Alliance (formerly DMAA). Dr. Nash is a principal faculty member for quality of care programming for the American College of Physician Executives in Tampa, Florida, and is the developer of the ACPE Capstone Course on Quality.

Scott B. Ransom, DO, FACHE, is a senior expert in the Healthcare Systems & Services practice at McKinsey & Company, Inc. He has more than 20 years of operations and leadership experience, including appointments as president and CEO of an academic health science center with a multispecialty clinical enterprise, several research institutes, and schools in medicine, public health, pharmacy, biomedical sciences, and health professions; as senior vice president/chief quality officer of an eight-hospital healthcare system; and as hospital vice president for medical affairs. Dr. Ransom has been a faculty member of three universities, including the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where he was a tenured professor in obstetrics, gynecology, health management, and policy.
