About the Author
John A. Van de Walle
The late John Van de Walle was a professor emeritus at Virginia Commonwealth University. He was a mathematics education consultant who regularly gave professional development workshops for K-8 teachers in the United States and Canada. He visited and taught in elementary school classrooms and worked with teachers to implement student-centered math lessons. He co-authored the Scott Foresman-Addison Wesley Mathematics K-6 series and contributed to the Pearson School mathematics program, enVisionMATH. Additionally, he wrote numerous chapters and articles for the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) books and journals and was very active in NCTM, including serving on the Board of Directors, Chair of the Educational Materials Committee, and a frequent speaker at national and regional meetings.
Jennifer M. Bay Williams
Jennifer Bay-Williams is a professor of mathematics education at the University of Louisville (Kentucky). Jennifer has published many articles on teaching and learning in NCTM journals. She has also coauthored numerous books, including: Mathematics Coaching: Tools and Resources for Coaches and Leaders, K-12; Developing Essential Understanding of Addition and Subtraction for Teaching Mathematics in Pre-K-Grade 2, Math and Literature: Grades 6-8, Math and Nonfiction: Grades 6-8, and Navigating through Connections in Grades 6-8. Jennifer taught elementary, middle, and high school in Missouri and in Peru, and continues to work in classrooms at all levels with students and with teachers. Jennifer served as member of Board of Directors for TODOS: Equity for All, as president of the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (AMTE), and editor for the 2012 NCTM Yearbook.
LouAnn Lovin
LouAnn Lovin is a professor of mathematics education at James Madison University (Virginia). She co-authored the First Edition of the Teaching Student-Centered Mathematics Professional Development Series with John A. VandeWalle as well as Teaching Mathematics Meaningfully: Solutions for Reaching Struggling Learners with special educators David Allsopp and Maggie Kyger. LouAnn taught mathematics to middle and high school students before transitioning to PreK-8. Over the last 15 years, she has worked in K-8 classrooms and engaged with teachers in professional development as they implement a student-centered approach to teaching mathematics. She has published articles in NCTM’s Teaching Children Mathematics and Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School and has served on NCTM’s Educational Materials Committee.LouAnn’s research interest is on ways to develop teachers’ mathematical knowledge needed to teach for understanding.
Karen Karp
Karen S. Karpis a professor of mathematics education at the University of Louisville (Kentucky). Prior to entering the field of teacher education she was an elementary school teacher in New York. Karen’s research interests is on teaching mathematics to diverse populations. HIGHLY Recommended

Although I've taught a variety of subjects in the 10 years I've been a teacher, his past year was my first time teaching 8th grade math. Although I took and passed (advanced) a released end-of-year standardized test, I didn't necessarily know HOW to teach the concepts. If you find yourself (like me) teaching math in middle school, this is a MUST-HAVE resource. The section on fractions alone is worth it,* but there are TONS of great insights to help you get students to focus on their own understanding of concepts.
The book is broken into 2 main sections: (1) establishing a student-centered environment, and (2) the actual teaching of student-centered math. Each chapter is FULL of activities to do with students to build understanding of particular concepts within a unit. You'll have to make/lead the activities yourself, but the ideas and intentions are there. Websites, downloadable black-line masters, illustrations of concepts via examples in the margins, etc.
TEACHER TIP: I bought "Sharpie Accent Tank-Style Highlighters, 6 Colored Highlighters (25076)" to use with this. I don't typically do colorful and artsy, but I ended up going full-blown nerd on this book (see pics). I'm really glad I bought the 6-color pack because each color ending up having a specific purpose:
- blue = websites & other technology-based resources (including black-line masters)
- orange = activities to do with students (there are DOZENS to do)
- green = specific teaching strategies ("ask this question," direct thinking in this way, etc.)
- neon yellow = general information
- gold/regular yellow = Common Core alignment
- pink = misconceptions, SPED, and ELL/ESL
The only thing I don't like about it is that they don't include even an outlined electronic copy of what you would do with each activity from the chapters. This allows great flexibility, sure, but you still have to come up with everything.
Still, Pearson did a really great job with this resource. I wish they offered a hard-cover version because I'll likely wear mine out.
* Success with fractions is indicative of success in Algebra 1 (page 106), and passing Algebra 1 is indicative of high school graduation (it's a requirement here in VA). So helping students with fractions helps them graduate in the long run. As I was reading the fractions section, I had this desire well up within me to teach 6th grade to prepare students for their coming years of middle-school instruction (by they time I got them in 8th grade, they're on their way out). Your students deserve the best instruction you can provide, and this book will definitely help you to do that.
If you're a parent, then this will help you to understand how to assist your child with particular concepts, and the activities can be done at home.

The go-to book for everything Common Core!

I teach Math 7 and Math 7 Accelerated, and this book has been the best resource for the transition to the Common Core standards. The book includes suggestions for creating a Common Core friendly classroom and has hundreds of activities that align with each strand of the standards. I regularly use activities from this book because they get students thinking and talking about the material with a teacher's guidance. They are able to form their own connections and understanding with the material, and that is so much more valuable and engaging than having them robotically copy notes from the board. More often than not, students thank me for such fun, thought-provoking lessons and activities, and I thank this book for helping me grow as a teacher in the new era of the Common Core.

I am rating this 5 stars because the teachers in my school (I am an elementary school principal) found this book extremely helpful in implementing common core math. I have top notch teachers who all were very excited to use this book. It is theoretically strong and has many practical applications within.
