Consider This Lovecraft Lite

"The Dunfield Terror" reads almost like an homage to Lovecraft in plain English. It has a lot of the Lovecraftian hallmarks like bizarre creatures from another dimension and a lack of explanation for what's going on, but it's missing the dense language that made Lovecraft such a challenge (and pleasure) to read. Though it shows a lot of promise in parts, the story becomes too convoluted with stories in three timeframes, and with an ending that just seems to come out of nowhere.

The plot centers around a small town in Newfoundland that is in the midst of its worst snowstorm in recent memory. During the storm, a mysterious fog that has the power to bend matter appears throughout town, causing death and destruction to anything it touches. Through flashbacks, we learn about experiments in the town back in the 50s that lead to the fog being brought to life. Further flashbacks provide even more background on the mysterious fog and the creatures that come with it.

Meikle does a decent job of balancing out the present day action with the flashbacks by alternating chapters to keep things from getting too confusing. Unfortunately, aside from a few minor tie-ins later in the book, there isn't much to connect the stories from two distinct eras. The addition of a further flashback later in the book helps better explain the flashback to the 50s, but the present day story is really almost left to stand on its own. While it does have moments of horror and grotesque imagery, I didn't feel that there was enough of a build-up to really make me care about any of the characters. One scene later in the book that could have been extremely moving really fell flat due to lack of character development.

I actually felt that the two flashback stories, particularly the 50's flashback, were much better, more developed stories and could have easily been standalone stories. Both had chilling moments, with the later flashback especially having some truly chilling descriptions. The two main characters in the 50s flashback were also way more interesting than the characters in the present day story.

I definitely would not consider this a bad read by any means, but it really could have been so much more. For Lovecraft fans, this book pays a decent tribute, but there are better stories out there that are closer in spirit to the master's style.

An Atmospheric, Thrilling Read

I really enjoyed this book. It's my first experience with Mr. Meikle's writing, and I was very thrilled, chilled, and entertained.

I grew up reading Lovecraft and other horror writers, and I watched the film version of The Philadelphia Experiment story with my retired Naval WWII veteran grandfather as a boy. He was generally quite down to Earth, but he had a love for science fiction after seeing what he believed to his dying day to be a UFO in 1947. This opened his mind up to a lot of sci-fi ideas, and while I'm not sure he believed it, he really enjoyed this story of a naval degaussing experiment gone awry. I bring that up because there is very interesting and entertaining play on that story at the core of this one. It is a jump off point, and Meikle goes his own way with it for sure, but the feel of TPE and the parts that horrified me as boy watching that movie make it into The Dunfield Terror to great effect.

There is also an element of haunting beauty at work in the descriptions of weird and sometimes frightening situations, objects, and creatures. Mix that with the effectively ooky and slimy thing that also come up, and there's a lot to get into here. Not the least of which is the setting: the harrowing snow, wind, and freezing waters of Newfoundland are--and I know how often this is said, but it's true here--a character in the form of a place and feeling.

If you enjoy horror with equals parts Weird, thrilling, and slimy, this is one you should read.

Finally, a real page-turner appears to thrill readers of weird fiction and not leave them disappointed. William Meikle's "The Dunfield Terror" has it all, folks: a driven mad scientist, a faithful chronicler of events, a bitch of a snowstorm, a rip in time/space, creeping octo-crabs, sentient fog that melts everything in it's path, a stalwart guy on a snowplow who smokes too much, and a legacy of decades old horror that started in 1955 and couldn't be stopped.

Meikle moves this hair-raising tale along at a very brisk clip, moving between years past and present. Characters feel real, people that you probably know forced to confront something that cannot be explained. You won't soon forget Mrs. Malloy and the refrigerator. Yes, this is Lovecraftian in tone, a coda of sorts to the classic "Color Out of Space", but yet author Meikle makes this homage his own. Refreshing in the sense that no "real" explanation is given for the events or how the whole business got so out of hand, the reader is simply pushed into the blizzard and goes from there.

If you enjoy the pulp feeling of werid fiction, give this a try. You'll be glad you did.

Focusing on the experiences of ordinary men,women, and children from Iran and Afghanistan in the east to Morocco in the west, this anthology vividly conveys a "grassroots" sense of Middle East culture and society today. The work locates Islam as a major influence in the everyday life; however, it also demonstrates that other factors such as work patterns and community and gender relations are often based on traditions outside/older than Islam and that these, too, are of great importance in shaping individuals' lives, beliefs, and hopes. Thirty-four selctions include essays, short stories, poetry and more.

Teacher/Librarians: 9th grade to adult. Social Studies/Humanities/Language Arts. See The Arab World Studies Notebook for lesson plans designed by Genevieve Wilson for using two of the essays from this work: (1) Chraibi's story "The Son's Return" for teaching about the Colonial Legacy; and (2) Donna Lee Bowen's "Abu Illya and Zakat" for teaching about the month of Ramadan fasting. These are wonderful short stories/essays and like the other thirty-two have a rich role to play in your classroom. Wilson's lesson plans are thoughtful, authentic, and provide springboards for much discussion.

Lots of diverse little essays on different aspects of daily life. Some feel a bit dated (like 30 or 40 years old), and one wonders if rapidly changing world would still mesh with those thoughts. But as a general reader with country-specific details and a few points that might generalize over the region.... it's pretty good.

Questions, here we come!

This is not another book about "big data" but rather a book about the qualities leaders need to forge ahead in our increasingly data driven world. Leaders of the past have focused on success and while success is the goal, future leaders must see failures as part of the grand process to achieve even greater successes. Fear of failure, be gone! The Mathematical Corporation provides myriad examples of how data of all kinds gives us insight to our deep questions.

In reading this, I was reminded of "The Machine" from Person of Interest, but the real Machine hasn't been built by one Mr. Finch. It's continually being built by all of us every day. The benefits are exciting to imagine. The leaders who will excel are those who ask great questions, impossible questions, mysterious questions. That resonates with me! Questions, here we come!

The Ultimate Collaboration on “the other side of complexity”

Up front, I share a response to this book’s subtitle: Whatever is achievable is not impossible; rather, it has not as yet been achieved. However, I wholly agree with Josh Sullivan and Angela Zutavern that – with rare exception -- a superior machine in collaboration with a superior human will outperform a superior machine or a superior human working alone. It is also true that there are certain tasks that a superior machine cannot do or do better than can a superior human...and vice versa.

What Sullivan and Zutavern characterize as “the cost-effective answer in their book.

Readers will appreciate the provision of mini-case studies of several mathematical corporations that Bloomberg LP, Ford Motor Company, GlaxoSmithKline, InterContinental Hotels Group, Merck, and Tesla as well as the Center for Prevention of Genocide, Federal Aviation Administration, U.S. Army, and U.S. Census Bureau. All have made highly innovative use of analytics, artificial intelligence, and big data (including smart data). Yes, these are all large organizations but the lessons learned from their initiatives can be of substantial value to leaders in almost any other organization, whatever its size and nature may be.

Sullivan and Zutavern provide an Afterword that is more forward-thinking than most. They concede, “many problems that seemed intractable are not. Solutions that seemed out of the question are not.” I agree. In a world that has become more volatile, more uncertain, more complex, and more ambiguous than at any prior time that I can remember, an observation by Oliver Wendell Holmes more than a century ago seems uniquely relevant: “I would not give a fig for simplicity this side of complexity but I would give my life for simplicity on the other side of complexity. Alan Perlis agrees: “Simplicity does not precede complexity, it follows it.”

Josh Sullivan and Angela Zutavern review key principles that will guide and inform efforts by increasingly more capable humans and machine, working in collaboration: complexity is a boon, not a burden; the machine works better than the gut; machine models top mental models; solutions don’t require logic; create value by giving it away; break through without experience; and perfect launches lose to imperfect ones. Perhaps channeling Albert Einstein, they urge us think about the mathematical corporation as simply as possible…but no simpler.

When Algorithms Rule!

"The Mathematical Corporation..." by Sullivan and Zutavern is an interesting book about the dynamic environment of businesses today. The authors discuss mining data, generalizable solution sets, multi-disciplinary applications, deep learning and examining unknown complexity.

When scientists perform regressions and correlations, much may be gleaned from the analysis. More importantly, outliers are identified for further analysis and refinement of the basic rule structures. In addition, machines identify organic patterns, clusters, classifications and unique sequences. Traditional mathematics, operations research and statistics are useful for minimizing, maximizing, optimizing, graphing, profiling and performing logical comparisons based upon truth table statements. Mass data may be represented in multi-plane linear algebra matrices in order to organize the data optimally for a computer analysis.

In artificial intelligence, much can be learned from polling the experts. As the pool of experts is expanded, more refined rule structures are developed based upon the expansion of the knowledge data base. In addition, more refined judgments are arrived at as more observations are made. For instance, engineers derive an MTBF (mean time between failures) based upon significant observations and testing of key component parts. Ultimately, an ideal replacement time period is developed so that expensive component part breakdowns can be avoided.

Artificial intelligence is helpful in reducing expensive processes of search. Ideally, an algorithm can arrive at optimal alternatives by using an advanced search engine to identify the best available choices based upon analyzing specific data bases for pre-defined criteria.

Machine learning will be critical for interplanetary travel. Once space flights arrive onto another planet, robots will begin to analyze the air, soil, moisture and pictures of the surrounding terra firma. This data will provide vital profiles so that engineers can design machines, building materials, pre-packaged food and spacesuits to accommodate astronauts on future missions.

Overall, "The Mathematical Corporation..." by Sullivan and Zutavern is an important strategic management planning tool for thinking outside the proverbial box. There is an extensive section of authoritative research notes at the end of the book.

EW Tips It's Hat to The Ladies of Wisteria Lane

In September 2004, "Desperate Housewives" literally became an overnight sensation and brought a fresh, quirky twist to the wrinkled, faded genre of the prime-time soap opera. Almost immediately, the actresses appeared on every magazine cover imaginable during the period of the first two seasons of the show. Gradually, interest waned and DH has practically fallen off the pop-culture radar the last several years. Imagine my joy when I was standing in a checkout line and I saw that Bree, Lynette, Gabby and Susan are gracing the cover of ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY in the magazine's classy send-off to the show, which will say goodbye for good this May. Even "Dallas" failed the make the cover back in 1991 when it petered out after 14 seasons, so the fact that the editors still think highly enough of the show to give it a cover story is compliment enough (although it does look like they went overboard in Photoshopping Teri Hatcher). There is a nice lengthy article inside that discusses the show's highlights and also the lawsuit against producer/creator Marc Cherry by Nicolette Sheridan (Edie Britt). A nice commemorative issue for you DH memorabilia collectors. I bought 2 copies!

easier than Knuth

For a maths student who has never before studied discrete maths, Koshy provides a good education. He takes you through several centuries of this field. At a very understandable pace. Many topics are covered. From Catalan numbers to (ancient) Egyptian multiplication to the eternal Goldbach conjecture on prime numbers.

Of course, much more recent ideas are covered. Like the Chinese remainder theorem, Euler's theorem, and public key cryptography, with a lengthy example given by the RSA cryptosystem. This is in one chapter developed to cryptology. No bad. But if your interest is this topic, you may desire a lengthier discussion, as in Stalling's book,

Cryptography and Network Security (4th Edition), or Spillman, Classical and Contemporary Cryptology.

Koshy's chapters also have the useful facet that the problems at the end of each chapter have a section on computer exercises. An acknowledgement that many of us come to this field fluent in computer programming, and perhaps with a need to use this maths in that context.

Koshy's book also overlaps with large portions of Knuth's classic volumes, "The Art of Computer Programming". But Koshy's pace of exposition is slower, and the examples are simpler to understand. For readers who might have tried reading Knuth and given up in frustration, perhaps consider Koshy for an easier read. Don't get me wrong. If you want to go seriously into number theory and computing, Knuth's books are classics. But to newcomers, Koshy could be more suitable.

The best Elementary Number Theory textbook for students

I recommend it for all College and University students taking number theory classes.
The book is concise, well documented, easily understandable, up to date with the last developments in the field, and with very nice examples and attractive proposed problems.
I read this textbook without letting if off my hands - like a detective novel or an exciting story.
