A truly thought-provoking book. I can see a lot of physical science in it, preceded by an excellent introduction to quantum mechanics and its interpretations. All over the book I can read a somewhat brave but logically coherent and wide-ranging speculation about the way in which information is non-locally propagated all over the Universe. It makes sense! An Universe without consciousness would make no sense. I was very impressed by the description of the role of the “spirit/soul” (as part of the mechanism of evolution of life), which this author considers as a mere biophysical parameter like all the others. And also he treats in-depth other very “hot” topics such as synchronicity, extraterrestrial intelligence and anomalous atmospheric phenomena. My impression is that the author, a physical scientist, knows much more than he writes, in this book. He speaks about heterodox and sometimes metaphysical subjects, which no scientist would never dare to do, using a cold academic mood, and the conclusions are shocking indeed. This book, which has the potential to trigger the brightest minds, is certainly a book to read.

This is a review of the extensively annotated translation of "Hesiod's Theogony" by Richard S. Caldwell -- just in case, as sometimes happens, it appears with a different translation. For those who are not familiar with it already, this is an account, in Homeric verse, of how the organized universe arose, expressed through generations of gods, their struggles for supremacy, and the culminating triumph of Zeus, with the great Olympians and a multitude of nature-deities listed along the way. Told in noble hexameters, it is an extremely violent story, full of abusive parents, mutilations inflicted by rebellious offspring, divine cannibalism, and a whole succession of other behaviors the Greeks themselves considered repellent. The philosophers had real problems with this work -- one can understand why Plato wanted to ban poets from the ideal state.

As it happens, I own most (but not quite all) of the currently or recently available English translations: those by Apostolos N. Athanassakis, Norman O. Brown, Hugh G. Evelyn-White (bilingual edition, Loeb Classical Library), R.M. Frazer, Richmond Lattimore, Dorothea Wender (Penguin Classics), and M. L. West (Oxford World's Classics). Except for Brown, who also covers only the "Theogony," they all contain at least the other main Hesiodic poem, "Works and Days" as a companion piece. West is also the editor of a Greek text, with extensive commentary. In this crowded field, in which the renderings of Athanassakis and Lattimore are notable for the quality of their poetry, Caldwell stakes a claim to utility.

The introduction contains numerous tables, displaying the relationships of various sets of gods, nymphs, monsters, and others, His translation is set out in verse lines, with running numbers at intervals of five, which makes locating references extremely easy. (No headnotes identifying thirty or fifty-line blocks of material!) An essay on the "Psychology of the Succession Myth" (rather simplistically Freudian, but interesting) is followed by a translation of some the most important related material from "Works and Days," and (hurray) parallel passages from a late prose compendium of Greek mythology, the Bibliotheke of Apollodoros (better known as the "Library of Apollodorus"). He has a useful (if now slightly dated) discussion of the main Near Eastern parallels. (Brown also discusses the comparative and psychological aspects of the poem, from different perspectives; his psychological treatment seems to me subtler, and more closely related to the political reading he offers.) [To be fair, I should have mentioned when this review was originally posted that Caldwell is here offering a simplified form of the argument in his 1985 book "The Origin of the Gods: A Pscyhoanalytic Study of Greek Theogonic Myth."]

There is a very good index-glossary. Most useful of all, however, are the running annotations. They range from the most elementary (assuming no prior knowledge of Greek myth or literature) to impressively advanced (issues of structure, technique, and deeper meanings). Caldwell explains that he has drawn heavily on West's commentary, which is nice, because West himself incorporated many of his conclusions implicitly in his prose translation, without the arguments that accompanied his text editions.

Given Caldwell's attention to detail, if you are a novice in the field who doesn't plan to build up even a small collection, but is willing to read a single volume with close attention, this might be your best choice. Those who already know the subject are likely to find it attractive, although sorting through such basic reminders as "Zephyros is the west wind, Boreas the north wind" in search of interpretive insights can be a test of patience.

Difficult to read!!

Despite the numerous 5-star reviews here I'm going to have to give this a 3--the translation was just plain hard to read, even though I do like the verse format as opposed to the "paragraph" format. Even the introduction was written in very formal language. I actually bought this edition based on all the perfect ratings here, even though I also wanted to read Works and Days (this edition only has Theogony) and bought another edition that had WD in addition to Theogony. The translation of Theogony in the other edition (West) was so much easier to read. Also, the overabundant footnotes in Caldwell break up the normal reading flow. Too much! I got through it, but it wasn't really fun. And I've recently read the Odyssey, the Iliad, Herodotus, and several other overview books on ancient Greece, so I'm not a total novice here. This edition may be good for the profession but not the enthusiast.

A great piece of work!

Hesiod's "Theogony" is excellently translated by Richard S. Caldwell. I have read other translations of Hesiod but preferred this one because it is done in verse as opposed to prose. The verse is not difficult to understand; the notes to the text are clear and good; the topic is made more interesting by way of the writing style. Overall, a very good piece of work.

About the Author
Hunt Slonem is an internationally recognized American painter, sculptor, and printmaker. His work has been exhibited in more than 350 galleries and museums worldwide, and is represented in over 100 museums, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim, The Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. He exhibits regularly at both public and private venues around the world, and has received numerous honors and awards, including a MacDowell Fellowship and National Endowment for the Arts grant. He lives in New York City and Louisiana, where he has notably restored two important plantations.

A gallery in a book

Hunt Slonem's art has always looked great on the page but the painter and his publisher created an extraordinary collection of the artists' work with his latest book. The pacing of the book is like walking through a studio or artist's gallery. Over-sized reproductions of small paintings, photographed with the edges of ornate frames turn this illustrated keepsake (coffee table genre) on its ear. The packaging is as playful as Slonem's bunny renderings. There's a gold wash on cover, book mark, margins and inside pages. Very luxe and very visual. You'll want to savor and send it to friends.

Love Hunt Slonem's Bunnies & This Book!

I must admit that I'm a big fan of Hunt Slonem's work, his taste as well as his stylistic sensibility! I love the lines, energy, color, and vibrancy he puts into everything he does and the mystical quality it imparts. His houses and studio are living works of art as anyone who has been in one of them or seen them in his gorgeous books can attest.

But what is it about the bunnies that delight us so? Their simplicity is compelling--and this is a beautiful way to enjoy them en masse--as if we were at the latest Bunnies opening. In fact, the bunnies come alive in these pieces!

For people who love art and books, this is a joy to hold in one's hands and digest. For people who love Mr. Slonem's bunnies, this is a must have. It's definitely a wonderful addition to my library--and what a great gift! I highly recommend Bunnies.

Pema Ch�dr�n is an American Buddhist nun in the lineage of Ch�gyam Trungpa. I love this book. It is already making a difference in my daily life as I apply Chodron's writings to my lived experience. This is not one of her newer texts, yet I think it's worth reaching back in time and reading it if you haven't done so already. Excellent wisdom written with genuine compassion and humility - inspiring and instructional. A great book.

Empowerment through the ear

In our very busy day, and high tech always connected world, these were spot on CDs to listen to coming or going to work. It will be amazing I think, to see how much you can listen to on a CD just doing errands around town. It is like having a caring friend, or coach talking to you to inspire, calm, and point you off in the path you need to flow. Each time I listen, I gathered something new to learn. Sometimes, a new thing to revisit from a different view. Pema is like that you know. I have been hooked on her books and CDs to supplement my reading, and yoga and meditation. We are a work in progress. Enjoy and Namaste'

Enormously helpful

I wanted to read "The Way of the Bodhisattva" but felt I needed a guide that was oriented to Westerners. This is the guide! It is easily comprehensible but thorough and does not appear to dumb down the material. I combined this with "For the Benefit of All Beings" by the Dalai Lama (also available through Amazon) which is a little bit more sophisticated and less a step by step guide. I find that using at least two sources in my study of Buddhist teachings keeps me from rabbiting off in the wrong direction.
I originally purchased "No Time to Lose" in the Kindle format but purchased a hard copy so I could add copious notes!
