Background-Zodiac Murders

I bought this because it was one of the things Zodiac referred to in one of his letters to the San Francisco Chronicle...so I had to read it. It is a short story and I liked it. I wanted it to go on and not end. Short stories always end like the writer had to pee really bad so they finished it abruptly. But it was very good.

About the Author
Following graduation from Michigan State University in 1966, Dr. Lauralee Sherwood joined the faculty at West Virginia University, where she is currently a Professor in the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology, School of Medicine. For the past 40 years, Professor Sherwood has taught an average of over 400 students each year in physiology courses for pharmacy, medical technology, physical therapy, occupational therapy, nursing, medical, dental, dental hygiene, nutrition, exercise physiology, and athletic training majors. She has authored three physiology textbooks: HUMAN PHYSIOLOGY: FROM CELLS TO SYSTEMS, FUNDAMENTALS OF HUMAN PHYSIOLOGY, and ANIMAL PHYSIOLOGY: FROM GENES TO ORGANISMS, all published by Cengage Learning/Brooks/Cole. Dr. Sherwood has received numerous teaching awards, including an Amoco Foundation Outstanding Teacher Award, a Golden Key National Honor Society Outstanding Faculty Award, two listings in Who's Who Among America's Teachers, and the Dean's Award of Excellence in Education.

Definitely my best companion in the course

This book explains physiology well in an easy-to-understand manner. When I would get lost in lecture, this book helped clear things up! Definitely my best companion in the course. Illustrations are great, text is concise, and the authors are thorough. Highly recommend.

Suitable Substitute for 8 Ed.

I bought this textbook for a college physiology course. I’ve kept up with the class so far, and can’t seem to see any differences except for table/figure placement on the pages. The newer 8th edition was release only 3 years later, so I know I’m not missing out on vital information.

I give it 3 stars because there are some sections that lack information (e.g. brain stem section of CNS – no detail given on midbrain/pons/medulla, simply skims over vital information), or, when enough detail is provided, it is written in such a way that it only confuses you more as you read (e.g. how photoreceptors transduce light into action potentials).

Still, it’s rudimentary enough to grasp the concept—and I have no anatomy background. This textbook is great only if your instructor is requesting the 8th edition, or you want an AP teen in high school to get ahead.

Physiology Textbook

I bought this book as a required text in a pathophysiology course. Almost every page has a great illustration to demonstrate the concept being taught. Easy to follow for the in-depth level of teaching it provides. Each chapter has practice questions at the end with answers in the back of the book. My favorite feature is the tear-out study cards located at the end of the book-these pages provide a breakdown/summary of the keypoints of each chapter and have really helped with my studying.

THE THIRD OF A FOUR-VOLUME "CLASSIC" SET OF THE LAW

Sir William Blackstone (1723-1780) was an English jurist, judge and Tory politician; these Commentaries were first published in four volumes (On on the Rights of Persons; On the Rights of Things; Of Private Wrongs; Of Public Wrongs) between 1765-1769, and were very influential on the development of the American legal system. Other volumes in this series are: Commentaries on the Laws of England: A Facsimile of the First Edition of 1765-1769, Vol. 1, Commentaries on the Laws of England Vol.2, and Commentaries on the Laws of England (Vol. 4).

He begins by saying, "Wrongs are divisible into two sorts of species: private wrongs, and public wrongs. The former are infringements or privation of the private or civil rights belonging to individuals considered as individuals... the latter are a breach and violation of public rights and duties, which affect the whole community... To investigate the first of these species of wrongs, with their legal remedies, will be our employment in the present book..." (Pg. 2)

He points out that the term "exchequer" (as in "court of the Exchequer") is so called "from the checqued cloth, resembling a chess-board, which covers the table there; and on which... the sums are marked and scored with counters." (Pg. 44)

He states that "With regard to the third absoute right of individuals, or that of private property, though the enjoyment of it, when acquired, is strictly a personal right; (but) it's nature and original, and the means of it's acquisition or loss, fell more directly under our second general division, of the rights of things..." (Pg. 138) He argues, "the law gives no private remedy for anything for a private wrong. Therefore no action lies for a public or common nuisance, but an indictment only: because the damage being common to all the king's subjects, no one can assign his particular proportion of it." (Pg. 219)

He suggests, "the trial by jury ever has been, and I trust ever will be, looked upon as the glory of the English law. And, if it has so great an advantage over others in regulating civil property, how much must that advantage be heightened, when it is applied to criminal cases!" (Pg. 379)

While this reprinted edition (e.g., using an "s" that looks to us like an "f") may be "off-putting" to some readers, I personally don't think it's a big deal; Blackstone's principles and reasoning are of such interest that they are certainly worth a bit of reading effort.

Ms. Rika breaks through the emotions and issues involved and gets to the core of a dominant's responsibilities within the power dynamic in an interesting and compelling way. I thoroughly enjoyed Ms Rika's first book Uniquely Rika and now this one. She has a very positive view of what a great D/s relationship can be - and is able to show us that through the couples she's used as examples.

Both her books have yielded several "ah-ha" moments for me… I don't necessarily agree with every single thing she says, but she does provide a lot of food for thought, and her clarity is quite amazing. I have not found anyone who can break down what makes a D/s relationship work like she can. And I use what I've learnt on a daily basis with my significant other.

If the subject matter she writes about fascinates you as it does me, you can continue to follow the further evolution of her thoughts on FetLife where she has a discussion group called Rika's Lair.

Firmly grounded in real world relationship dynamics

If you are looking for a realistic viewpoint of workable female led relationships, this is it. Order "Uniquely Rika" along with this one and read it first - they should be sold as a set, for each one imparts it's own knowledge. For years I had read femdom books where something didn't seem "quite right" - it was hard to distinguish what was punishment, reward, work, and play in D/s relationship. Ms Rika makes it all clear, cutting through murky relationship waters to show practitioners, and would to be practitioners of FLR's a clearer path to success. This and "Uniquely Rika" are the two best books on FLR I've ever read! Bravo!

I fell in love with the setting, the characters, and the story

The Last Refuge grabbed me from the first page and wouldn't let go until the very end. The setting is absolute perfection. Few people have even heard of the Faroe Islands. (I am one of the lucky ones; after seeing a stunningly beautiful photograph of towering green cliffs and cascading waterfalls, I learned that it was taken on one of the eighteen islands that make up the archipelago.) Craig Robertson puts readers right in the middle of this incredible landscape and shares not only its beauty, wildlife and remoteness, but the towns, the people, and the customs and language as well. My reaction to the setting was visceral and immediate.

But setting alone does not make a book. To it, Robertson adds a strong cast of characters. John Callum is a man filled with secrets, and although readers quickly learn how horrifying his nightmares are and how quick-tempered he can be, they somehow know that he is a man who can be trusted, a man who can be a friend. Robertson makes them want to shake Callum until he tells them why he ran away from Scotland-- and it's a secret that takes a long time to unveil.

Karis, the woman with whom Callum falls in love, is alluring and mercurial. She has secrets, too. Many of the secondary characters do, and Callum even has a difficult time figuring out the local inspector, Broddi Tunheim, who refuses to go quietly into that good night once the Danish police have made their entrance. These three characters-- and others-- shine brightly in this tightly woven plot that has so many twists and turns.

Yes indeed-- The Last Refuge is a perfect blend of story, character and setting, each of which illuminate and strengthen the others. Sometimes bleak and desolate, it's an enthralling look deep into a man's soul and deep into a fascinating place. I highly recommend it.

A great mystery/thriller in a dark atmospheric setting

I loved the setting. I have never been to the Faroe Islands so I looked at all the Google images of it and when he would talk about specific places, I would google map with satellite view. The author creates a powerful moody atmosphere in which the reader continues to be pulled along unaware of where it is all heading. A good thriller with some very tense plotting in places where you think you know what is about to happen but again, surprise. So read this book and enjoy the ride!

An ok guide with a few gripes

I own just about every guide related to Final Fantasy games. I love them for their art work and style. I picked up this guide for mostly that same reason. The art style of this game is wonderfully cute and my hope was for a guide that highlighted some of that while also being a good guide.

Quality of Make 2/5
As other reviewers have mentioned, the paper quality rips very easily. Just flipping to pages, I have personally made 1 inch tears on a few pages. The 'wet' texture some people mention doesn't bother me, the ink doesn't run so it's purely an aesthetic issue.

Guide Quality 4/5
There are easy to read maps for all area. Quests and side quests are always spelled out easily. All items and secrets are mentioned. Additionally, the guide has built in 'pro-tips' for sections. IE: Go do this optional quest now for a free 45k exp. I really like that. My only issue with the main story guide proper is it often waits till after you need something to tell you to have it. IE: Just got to a boss, it then explains you need a fire magic; rather than before the boss explaining to have a fire magic for the boss. Or a dungeon has walls to be broken but it doesn't tell you to have a mirage that can break walls ahead of time, so you have to back track to switch out your mirages.

Ease of use 1/5
This category comes down to the pokemon nature of the game. There's hundreds of mirages to capter but the guide isn't great for looking them up. Each new area lists who is available, but not how to catch them. The mirage section on how to catch them is very specific...but not easy to browse. You encounter a new enemy, you flip to the mirage section, only to have to scan through 30 pages to find the one you want. They are loosely arranged by evolution groupings, but not order of appearance or alphabetical. Alphabetical by name would have made the mirage section 10x easier to use. Or just put capture requirements under each mirage's name in the main section so you don't have to flip.

As I said, I love guides for the art. This guide had quite a bit of pictures of the different mirages and areas. Personally, I could have had more art, but in the end it was a guide book not an art book.

Newspaper pages

It's a great guide so far, the pages are quite thin and resemble newspaper quality. Not what I'm used to TBH. The pages are so thin that the printed ink makes them feel 'wet' and have that wet wrinkled look a little bit around the edges. It's not all that bad but something to note.

The poster mirage list it comes with is excellent! And so far I've enjoyed the layout. If it ends up being annoying I'll update this review.

UPDATE:
After beating the game I just want to say that this guide was truly invaluable to my playthrough. Had all the secrets, fun little grinding tips in the beginning. Things to stay away from and to try. Definitely great for the boss fights. It's not the greatest-most-in-depth guide but it's very good.

Doesn't have any kind of formula's or attack ratio's, which is nice with RPG's like this but since World of FF isn't super deep in that stuff I understand why it may not be included. If you want a full play-through or platinum, I'd recommend the guide. The easy Mirage list at the end is so much better and easier then scrolling/finding it in game.

Also on the pages, got used to it fast and the print quality was superb. Easy to read and move on to the next pages. It's just the pages were thin so they easily tear.

The content of this guide is good, but the paper material it use is cheap. I am very disappointed that Prima use this newspaper grade paper to print the guide. Nowadays, the walkthrough can be found on internet easily and it is free. I bought the guide because I want to collect it and add it to my collection. If Prima continues to use this cheap material, then I will just totally give up buying their guide book.
