About the Author
Alexey W. Root was the 1989 U.S. Women’s Chess Champion and is a Woman International Master. She has a Ph.D. in education from UCLA and is the author of five previous books on chess in education. Thinking with Chess: Teaching Children Ages 5-14 is her first book for Mongoose Press.
Dr. Root is a senior lecturer in the School of Interdisciplinary Studies at The University of Texas at Dallas (UT Dallas). From 1999 to 2003, she served as associate director of the UT Dallas Chess Program, home to one of the top college chess teams in the world. Root currently teaches Chess Online courses for college credit via UT Dallas eLearning. She lives in Denton, Texas.

EXCELLENT book for teaching groups of kids chess

I teach middle school, and decided to start a chess club. I used to play quite a bit, and learning chess helps kids at that age in all sorts of ways, so I figured I'd just go for it. I was hesitant to buy this book, because there were no reviews, but I am glad I did, because it is perfect for teaching chess to a group of kids.

The book is broken down into chapters that progress and build on one another. The author, bless her, has included black line masters for some worksheets that are tied into the lesson. Lessons aren't just about pins, forks, pawn development, etc., but about classification, developing board sense, and game theory. She also includes creative games to children how the pieces move so they aren't bored stiff as they gain experience and understanding of chess.

If you want to teach a child, or better a group of children, how to play and get them playing solid games of chess, this is the book for you. Any chess club sponsor will not go wrong with this book, and personally, I think it should be published and sold by the USCF, because it really is that good. Your kids won't know the names of any openings when they're done with this, but they will be more than equipped to take on (and beat) their parents and middle-level casual players.

This book would not be suitable for people who already have a solid grasp of the fundamentals, but there are other books out there for that (and hopefully the author will write a sequel, which I'd buy in a heartbeat).

Excellent Chess Book

Alexey Root has a vast knowledge of chess. In this book she outlines the fundamentals of chess in an easy to read format. If you are starting from square one, this book is a perfect solution to teaching the basics of chess to children in a concise yet comprehensive manner. This book helped us teach chess to a special needs child. I highly recommend this book to anyone considering teaching chess to children.

Excellent overview

This book is an excellent overview of the major theories that impact accounting judgment and decision making. Too many people forget, or don't know, that accounting isn't made up of distinct rules with yes/no answers - there are many opportunities for financial results to be changed through a good/bad decision by an accountant.

The only thing that keeps this book from being four stars - it needs to be even longer and more detailed. This is an extremely relevant topic in today's world.

On the recommendation of a coworker, I bought this and used it as a reference during application season. Thanks to it, a lot of online forum reading, the Manhattan GMAT study guides, and advice from several mentors, I was accepted into every program that I applied to and just finished my first day at Wharton. As mentioned time and time again in the book, it won't tell you exactly how to fill out your applications or what to write in your essays, but it offers a road map that others have used to gain acceptance. By the time I hit my final "Submit Application" button, I had dog earned about half of the pages in my copy of the book and viewed it as an incredibly integral part of my application success stories.

Worth it's weight in gold

If you were looking for from this book is a secret that will help you get over any potential hurdles you face (or have already made) this book probably ain't for you. There are no secrets in (nor does the author claim there to be) this book just demystifies and puts into context the application process at top universities, its very broad. The insights from deans of admissions from top schools are also tremendously useful. So many people rule themselves out before the ever stand and this books really helps you guage if not your chances, but your potential. Great buy.

Excellent book for beginners in R

I am relatively new to R, and this is the second book I read on it.

It was easy to read and the walk-through examples helped me to get comfortable with the different R libraries that are being used to draw heat maps in R.
I found the many examples and figures very helpful and it is nice that the author also provided some background about the different functions.

Short and concise

It is a really brief tutorial on heat maps in R. This is what I expected from a 72 page book, it really helps to get to the action fast. Additional information and background information was helpful, and some basic R explanations were welcome refreshers.

About the Author
Jochen Wirtz is Professor of Marketing at the National University of Singapore (NUS) and an international fellow of the Service Research Center at Karlstad University, Sweden. Professor Wirtz holds a PhD in services marketing from the London Business School and has worked in the field of services for more than 25 years.

Professor Wirtz s research focuses on service marketing and has been published in over 200 academic articles, book chapters and industry reports. He is an author or co-author of more than 10 books, including Services Marketing: People, Technology, Strategy (World Scientific, 8 h edition, 2016), co-authored with Professor Lovelock, which has become one of the world s leading services marketing textbook, translated and adapted for more than 26 countries and regions, and with sales of some 800,000 copies. His other books include Flying High in a Competitive Industry: Secrets of the World s Leading Airline (McGraw Hill, 2009), Essentials of Services Marketing (Prentice Hall, 3r edition, 2016), and Winning in Service Markets: Success Through People, Technology and Strategy(World Scientific, 2016).

He serves on the editorial review boards of more than 10 academic journals, including the Journal of Service Management, Journal of Service Research, Journal of Service Science and Cornell Hospitality Quarterly, and is also an ad-hoc reviewer for the Journal of Consumer Research and Journal of Marketing.

The late Christopher Lovelock was one of the pioneers of services marketing. He consulted and gave seminars and workshops for managers all around the world, with a particular focus on strategic planning in services and managing the customer experience. From 2001 to 2008, he had been an adjunct professor at the Yale School of Management, where he taught services marketing in the MBA program. His distinguished academic career included 11 years on the faculty of the Harvard Business School, and two years as a visiting professor at IMD in Switzerland. He has also held faculty appointments at Berkeley, Stanford, and the Sloan School at MIT, as well as visiting professorships at INSEAD in France and the University of Queensland in Australia.

Author or co-author of more than 60 articles, 100 teaching cases, and 27 books, Professor Lovelock has seen his works translated into 16 languages. He served on the editorial review boards of the Journal of Service Management, Journal of Service Research, Service Industries Journal, Cornell Hospitality Quarterly, and Marketing Management, and was also an ad-hoc reviewer for the Journal of Marketing.

Widely acknowledged as a thought leader in services, Professor Lovelock has been honored by the American Marketing Association s prestigious Award for Career Contributions in the Services Discipline. This award has been renamed the SERVSIG Christopher Lovelock Career Contribution Award in his honor.

The Best Services Marketing Book Out There--and 2016 Current to Boot!

Personally, I think this is the best services marketing book out there. The 2016 edition is particularly excellent because so much has changed in the services landscape between now and any of the earlier published books by any authors. I think services marketing is in the tier of digital/social media marketing in its need to be taught with texts and readings absolutely current and timely. Additionally, I see almost everything as a service exchange--and this book does a wonderful job of delineating traditional service industries, incorporating and explaining ones newly perceived as services (e.g. software as a service), it melds some tenets of service dominant logic with a classic view, and it lays out the modern landscape of services. It gets into deep theoretical concepts without jargon. The author of this edition and his late co-author (Lovelace) of the former editions are well-cited scholars in the services marketing field. Lovelace's groundwork from the earlier editions is still here in Wirtz's updated edition. Their theoretical conceptualizations are given in a down-to-Earth manner, along with examples of theoretical advances from many other scholars. At the same time the text clearly shows how these insights can be incorporated into a managerial toolkit for real change in a service culture top-down and bottom-up. I am excited to impart this view of services marketing to the next generation of MBAs. This edition is with World Scientific Publishers. In an agreement with the author, they agreed to a low price for the US of the Kindle version and also the softcover is available at a price that is much lower than that of other text books. As marketers we realize that low price can influence quality perception. In this case it should influence SERVICE perception. The text is excellent, by leading minds in the services field, there are cases galore, it's great reading, and a full suite of instructor resources is available. It's written in a manner that allows each chapter to stand alone, so a course can be taught in order of the concepts you choose. I used this book to learn services marketing in the first place, and now I'm using it as a professor to teach it. I recommend it enthusiastically. I did not receive remuneration of any kind for this review, nor for adopting the text. I bought the text myself for myself and value it highly. As a final note, this book in Kindle and soft cover is a wonderfully low price point for students. That is a great example of a services marketing move by the publishers and author from my standpoint as a professor. Students who have a good textbook from which to read make class much better, and many more students buy the book when it's affordable. Also, considering my class is a service to my students in the new services landscape way of thinking of higher education, it's win-win services marketing all around. I find this a great object lesson. As an addendum, the author and publishing staff are available by email and very responsive. Excellent textbook and service experience all around. I recommend this highly as both a student and professor of services marketing.

An essential tool for small business owners like me to grow their business profitably

This practical guide by Jochen Wirtz gives me the specific advice and tools I need to build my business profitably. I receive so many quick fix marketing and advertising offers from businesses who say they can help me build my business, but none of them explain the simple truth this guide does. The simple truth I’ve learned from this book is that marketing or advertising campaigns won’t work unless I get the basics right. The basics that are clearly explained in detail in this book. I find the examples of how successful companies have used this guide really useful too as I can picture how I can incorporate what they’ve done into my business. I find the best approach for me to apply this strategy to my business is to read a section each week (or two), rather than reading straight through in one session, and then applying what I’ve learned in that week. This way I find that I am able to make step-by-step manageable changes while I build my business.

But the story does not stop there: along the way, Jane met dozens of people with similar horror stories: a savagely murdered loved one, a justice system that refused to function. She and Jan Miller, whose daughter was murdered during summer break at Chico State University in a case still unsolved, founded Citizens Against Homicide to fight back for the victim's families. At the time of Jane Alexander's death in 2008, they had helped solve 20 cold case murders, were working on 500 homicide investigations, and had seen their organization spread to all 50 states, with more than 5,000 members.

an excellent true-crime story of a woman's fight for justice

I saw Jane Alexander, the woman this book is about, on television and had to get this book right away because I was so impressed with her as a person. Jane went from being a very dependent woman, who had mostly been a stay-at-home mom to become a heroic and widely-known crusader for crime victims' rights at an age when most women would be settling into retirement. She had intended to settle into active (and financially comfortable) old age with her boyfriend, who had been a friend of the family and member of her social set for decades. The murder of her wealthy aunt changed all her plans. The boyfriend, a charmer whose tales of international intrigue had once entertained their friends, disappeared after embezzling money from those same friends and draining Jane's assets dry. She lost her beautiful home and even her beloved dog. Some of her old friends stood by her, while others blamed her for harboring a criminal in their community. Jane soon learned that the police and prosecutors were not her friends either. The story of how she battled the system as well as her ex-boyfriend is just amazing. In the course of being her own investigator, she found many, many other women who were drained financially and discarded by this man. She got several of them to testify at his trial. The book is very well written, not necessarily a given in the true-crime genre.

A Gripping Story of Courage.. Brilliantly Delivered!

Having read many True Crime novels over the years, I must hail this piece of work by author James Dalessandro and contributor David Mehnert as being one of the finest yet.
The story of Jane Alexander was both awe inspiring and admirable. I am also a family victim of a brutal homicide crime. The convictions of the two murderers in my case came from a trial of circumstantial evidence. Knowing all to well the frustrations of our justice system and lack of victim's rights, I praise and wish to thank Mrs. Alexander for her strength of resolve along with her success in creating an easier and more pro-active path for fellow victims as ourselves.
Unlike so many other True Crime novels, this book was written with the same "mirrored passion" that so obviously drove the dedicated individuals forth for so many years to see that justice was served. The book's author James Dalessandro, truly honored Mrs. Alexander's efforts by his attentive, thought provoking and accurate depiction of her difficult and painful journey.
A wonderful and tenderly written tale... Purely brilliant!

This thoroughly-researched and carefully-planned expose of a heinous crime and one victim's journey from woman-in-denial to crusader is a fascinating and speedy read. Engaging the reader from the outset, Mehnert and Dalessandro magage to weave together all the facts, giving us multiple perspectives, even as we empathize with the protagonist, Jane Alexander. Especially revealing and moving is the revelation of the personal journies of Jane and others like her through a criminal justice system that is not always diligent in its pursuit of offenders.

this book changed the way i played over blues as well as rock in under 30 minutes! excellent resource for ideas covering the entire fret board. excellent and versatile backing tracks that are great for experimenting. highly recommend!

Excellent book for the budding guitarist

This book was gifted to me, but I can tell you that it is worth far more than the $2.99 that is being charged for it. I have been looking for resources to get into blues guitar playing for some time now, but until this book I had come up empty handed or disappointed. This book has the right amount of guidance, theory, examples; while still encouraging creativity and freedom to improvise.

I took advantage of one of the author's offers on Reddit to download this for free but even at the full price of $2.99 I'd say this book is a an excellent choice for anyone wishing to learn some blues. It will really help you learn the difference between the major and minor pentatonic. The information is clearly presented and well organized. The author offers a higher quality pdf download if you send him an invoice of your order and the accompanying mp3 files are available for download on his site. The whole books shows up at an excellent size on my Android phone. There is a bit of advertising copy at the end of the book to sell you on his other products but, honestly, since it is located at the very end it is easy to ignore if you choose to. This book made me interested in possibly buying his other books in the future.

SHANE STANFORD is Teaching Pastor at Main Street United Methodist Church in Hattiesburg, Mississippi and is Staff Leader/Teacher for Time That Makes the Difference, a weekly TV and radio program seen and/or heard in more than 5 million homes. A noted communicator and presenter, Shane is the author and developer of numerous seminars and workshops, including A2 Indicators, a healthy-church assessment tool that has been used in over 800 congregations. He is married to Dr. Pokey Stanford, an Associate Professor at William Carey College, and they have three daughters. Shane lives with hemophilia, HIV and hepatitis-C contracted through a blood transfusion.

What an Amazing Book!

Recently, I was searching the Kindle store and stumbled across this author. I didn't know anything about the author or this book, but the title of this book really struck a cord with me. I decided to give it a try. I'm so glad I did. This book is amazing.

Shane Stanford has faced many challenges in his life. He was born with a serious blood disorder called Hemophilia. As a result of a blood transfusion, he contracted HIV at the age of 16, and he also has Hepatitis C. It would not be surprising at all if he was bitter and angry with God and the world. But the incredible thing about Shane is he's not angry. He has been hurt by people's reactions at times, but it is obvious that he was a deep love and trust in both God and the Bible. He has experienced prejudice and rejection from Christians. At one point, he was fired as pastor after the congregation found out he was HIV positive. He himself has experienced deep pain and betrayal. His humility is amazing. Even though I am very familiar with the Bible stories Shane touches in this book, it was almost like I was reading them for the first time. Shane brings a completely new perspective to these stories. He also sprinkles his own story and those of other people through out. This book is like a cool drink of water for someone who feels abandoned by God and is struggling to hold on to hope. It is like having a long conversation with a trusted friend.

I found the chapter on betrayal to be especially compelling. I think anyone who is going through a difficult time in their life would benefit from reading this book. Even non Christians would benefit from it. Shane has a deep love for people. He freely admits his own shortcomings, struggles, and mistakes. He is incredibly non-judgmental and incredibly down to earth. This book is written in a very accessible, down-to-earth way. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is going through a difficult time in their lives. This would also be a great book to give to a friend or family member who is struggling. I definitely intend to read other books by this author.

About the Author
Ashbruner is Professor of Biology in the Department of Genetics at the University of Cambridge. By training and inclination, he is a Drosophila geneticist, although for more than a decade, he has not been where he belongs-the lab bench-but in front of computer screens. He spent six years at the European Bioinformatics Institute, first as the Institute's Research Programme Coordinator, and then as its Joint-Head. He is a fellow of the Royal Society and an Honorary Foreign Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

R. Scott Hawley is a Senior Scientist at the Stowers Institute of Medical Research. Before joining the Stowers Institute in 2001, he was a Professor of Genetics at the University of California at Davis for 10 years. An accomplished textbook author, he has also published over 50 papers and articles in scientific journals. He has also served on the Board of Directors of the Genetics Society of America and is currently on the Editorial Board of "Genetics."

Michelle Walker is an Intellectual Property Specialist for Galileo Laboratories in Santa Clara, California. She earned an MS in Genetics from the University of California at Davis, has written several scientific articles, served as an Editor for the entomological journal "Sociobiology," and spent numerous hours volunteering her time in the field of bioethics and as a scientific mentor for inner-city children.

After years of being dissatisfied with different paperback editions of Plato, I finally stumbled across this Dover Thrift Edition of Plato's four most essential biographical dialogues. Focusing on the life and person of Socrates, this razor-thin paperback volume is the most affordable and accessible introduction to Plato that you will find on the market. Rather than plunging you directly into the Republic and other more abstract writings, it wisely focuses on what we all love about Plato: His dialogues centering on the eccentric life and Christ-like death of his great teacher Socrates. This English translation is the old standard one, of course, but it's a wonderfully slender little volume that gives you enough Plato without overwhelming you. For those of us who like our Plato in small doses, rather than in a fat trade paperback (i.e. Signet Classics) or big expensive tome of collected writings, this volume is wonderful. In our electronic world, there's little need to have all the writings of Plato in one hardcopy edition anyway, as one will easily find several free and inexpensive translations of his entire corpus in electronic formats online.

A great way to introduce philosophy.

Most philosophy books just present a stream of assertions and arguments that may of may not be organized into chapters. If you don't like reading what amount to court briefs, those books can be a pain to read.

This book is nothing like that.

The Dialogues are framed as Socrates's life story, complete with side characters, one-line-jokes, and dramatic tension. These things majorly elevate what would have been a dull slog through ancient Greek debates. You end up rooting for Socrates rather than just analyzing him. The final dialogue, in which he openly drops arguing in favor of simply stating his religious beliefs, is a little off, but the rest of the book is great. Easily the best I could expect out of a philosophy book.

This translation and presentation is excellent. It is amazing to read it again and see that Athens and the hypocrisy of thought then is very similar to that of our own society currently.
An enlightening read!
