Chris Gunn, an ESL instructor for two decades, is the owner and chief writer for Lanternfish ESL, a website bringing printable, quality ESL resources to teachers and parents. He currently teaches at Inha University in South Korea, where he developed the program for Academic and Professional Communication. Hours and Hours of Fun!

As an ESL teacher, this activity book contains lots of great supplemental material for my false beginner and intermediate level classes. I especially like the way the author is able to recycle a lot of the fixed phrases and phrasal verbs that are so common in everyday speech. The puzzles are actually structured in a way that allows students not only to review vocabulary, but also help them become better language learners. The bottom line - my students really enjoy the puzzles - and with over 100 different puzzles, this book is truly a great value.

An outstanding introduction to this complex battle, in which the wars of espionage and battlefield meshed to bring victory

McDonald Publishing and the Imperial War Museum teamed up back in the late 1960s and early 1970s to publish this tight series of illustrated paperbacks on the history of World War I, World War II (and a few other conflicts of the 20th century), which were picked up by Ballantine in the United States. They were all divided into subjects: battles, campaigns, weapons, war leaders, politics in action, human conflict, and regalia, by color bands on the bottom, enjoying common editing and artwork, and a fairly common collection of well-known historians. They cost $1 at the time (a good deal of money) and a lot more now (being out of print).

The series as a whole is slightly outdated by the disclosures from Allied codebreaking, and suffered from being whipped together in a hurry, but they remain then and now a fine introduction to conflict in the 20th century -- if you can find them.

Dick Horton writes this book with two eyes: that of a historian and that of a participant. He was one of the Coastwatchers whose intelligence contributions to the campaign were critical for victory.The campaign was fairly complex -- US Army and New Zealand (and Fijian) forces driving up and through ghastly jungle-covered islands towards their objective of Rabaul on New Britain, battling Japanese defenders and malarial swamps.

Like Guadalcanal, the New Georgia campaign was fought in three dimensions, but this time the Americans did a better job -- technology, training, and tactics were increasingly equal or superior to those of Japan's, and the Japanese were starting to feel the pinch of many shortages. The Americans realized they did not need to take Rabaul to achieve their objective, but leave it withering on the vine, setting the pattern for the "island-hopping" of the rest of the Pacific war (hence the book's subtitle).

With 175 pages to tell the tale, Dick Horton has to focus on the larger pictures and colorful incidents, and maps of the key naval battles would have been useful. He devotes an entire chapter to the best-known story of the campaign -- Lt. John F. Kennedy and PT 109 -- and the photographs of the grim fighting and grimmer results are quite shocking. The US military makes a major effort to record its wars in print and photograph.

Overall, this book is an outstanding introduction to this complex battle, in which the wars of espionage and battlefield meshed to bring the Allies a major victory.

Bought this book for a family member. Do not know anything about motorcycles, but thought this book would help. Well, it did! He was excited about the book and he loved it! Said he needed a book like this for his motorcycle. I am happy! Good product!!

Seriously good book

This is a GREAT book. The writing is very accessible, but goes pretty deep into the mechanics, physics and chemistry of engines and all the major motorcycle systems. You will learn TONS of CORRECT information from this and the other Haynes Motorcycle Techbooks. Basics doesn't mean this is a bunch of childish "the engine makes it go and the brakes make it stop". The writers are experienced and very knowledgeable (not just in their own minds) and write very well. Technical concepts are clearly explained without the fluff, hokum and hearsay you routinely see in books on cars and motorcycles. A nice bit of humor is mixed in to keep things moving when it gets heavy. I learned so much from this. My favorite section was probably the engine history, which was absolutely fascinating. I never knew so many configurations have been tried and re-tried over the last century. Well worth the full price (and I hate paying full price for new books).

I love this book. The way H Clay Trumbull explains the different Blood Covenants, is simply amazing. If anyone want to understand in depth, the significant, of Blood Covenants, try reading this book.

Thorough yet misleading

This book is definately worth reading as it is VERY thorough in its research on blood covenant with the Bible and ancient peoples. HOWEVER- what I disagree with - is what Mr. Trumbull semms to infer is that God uses blood covenant as it is something ancient people would understand ( similar to God using agricultural metaphors throughout Bible) RATHER than GOD initiated Blood covenant ( and it started w/ Adam and Eve- animals being killed to cover their sin ( animal skins to cover their nakedness rather than leaves- and Mr. Trumbull starts with Cain and Abel- skipping the Adam-Eve record which I find puzzling))It would seem the ancients use and knowledge of blood covenant COULD be the devil counterfeiting/ or distracting from GOD's blood covenant ,God's intention and importance of the PROPER sacrificial blood- Old an NEW testament.

What I found helpful is /was all the ancients knowledge of blood covenant. As modern society- is very 'bloodless" and I don't the modern Christian church really gets it on blood covenant- what a HUGE deal it is- and the blood of Christ. This book will help with this. It is very scholalrly in tone-but worth the work to read it.

Trumbull breaks new ground in exploring a topic of theological interest which he states 'has been strangely overlooked by biblical critics and biblical commentators generally, in these later centuries.' This is the covenant of blood, a ritual custom of great antiquity and widespread, even universal, pervasiveness. He writes: `The belief seems to have been universal, not only that the blood is the life of the organism in which it originally flows, but that in its transfer from one organism to another the blood retains its life, and so carries with it a vivifying power.'

It isn't through literary exploration alone that this 19th-century scholar elaborates his study. He can boast of his own itinerancy in the Near East while recounting the (often dangerous!) expeditions of others anywhere from Asia to the Americas. As is to be expected across cultures and continents of manifold variegation, the use of the blood in blood-covenant ceremonies is not always the same; it can range anywhere from imbibing to direct physical contact of the openings in the participants, to sprinkling, though it usually consists of some form of intertransfusion. In some cultures a substitutive formula is used such as wine, a symbolism Jesus himself implemented in the institution of the Eucharist. Faint traces of blood-covenant rituals are also found in cultures where no blood is used at all, or any other substitute. The people, however, may be unconscious of the original significance of their practices.

All these customs share a common thread: the bond created by the participants in the act is indissolubly strong, stronger even than biological affinity. Why? As Trumbull explains, `the taking in of another's blood was the acquiring of another's life, with all that was best in that others nature.' To violate the covenant bond was to call against oneself the full fury of cosmic punishment. For instance, those who violated the Mosaic covenant (enacted by sprinkling of animal blood) are said to be `cut off', i.e. their lineage is obliterated through the curse of an untimely death.

In sacrificial ritual animal blood, Trumbull points out, takes the place of human blood. The life of the animal is given to God in the lieu of the devotee's. Therefore the blood/life cannot be consumed. Trumbull reminds us, `it is the life (which the blood is), and not the death (which is merely necessary to the securing of blood), of the victim, that is the means of atonement.' And this is the gravity of the sacrifice, in Christian religion, that God made by his son: 'and this', Trumbull states, 'was the truth of truths which he declared to those whom he instructed.'

I love Mary Higgins Clark books - this was surprising for me - I did not care for it - my only favorite was the Alvirah and Willy story. I really enjoy the Alvirah and Willy stories. These stories were to quick, I know they are short stories but I don't care for this style of writing from MHC. I like the suspense throughout all her other books - these were too quick, very odd and left me saying, "what? hmmmmmmmm...........okaaaaayy....."

“The Tell-Tale Purr.” is the strangest thing ever and made me sorry I wasted time reading it. One of the stories is familiar.

Mary's last few books, "Cinderella Murder, I've got you under my skin, etc. - Fabulous reads - terrific writing" On a good note, I will no longer waste time reading any short stories she puts out - just not my thing - I had trouble finishing each one - I normally sit down and will read her books in 2 to 3 days - this took me a while because there was just no interest, no pull whatsoever. If you look at my other reviews on MHC, I leave her 5 stars I'm giving 3 instead of 2 on this because of the Alvirah and Willy story.

I have always loved this author so when I saw the short stories I thought why not and I wasn't wrong Each story was different,some were better than others but each was unique. I enjoyed reading tis and highly recommend it ,it keeps you guessing and it was hard to put down.it was nice to be able to get something done In between stories.
