Surfaces and interfaces are concepts of fundamental importance in materials science and technology. All materials have surfaces. When two or more materials are put together, interfaces appear. In composite materials, interfaces play a crucial role in determining mechanical, optical, and electronic properties.

Surfaces and interfaces can be dramatically altered when surfactant molecules are applied to them, modifying not only the interactions between two materials at the interface, but also the bulk properties of a composite. Surfactants are key materials in processes involving adhesion, coating, mixing, domain formations, and many other phenomena in the medical, pharmaceutical, chemical, and electronic industries.

Surfactants exhibit a variety of interesting phenomena such as formations of micelles, vesicles, layers, and gels. They provide a fascinating example of self-assembly. Surfactants have many phases and undergo phase transitions between them. Understanding these phenomena is a great challenge for physics and chemistry, and is of increasing technological importance.

Dr. Kaoru Tsujii is one of the pioneers and leaders in the science and technology of surfactants. He has long expolored the field, both in theory and in industrial applications, and seeks to demonstrate applications of surfactants in our everyday life and industry. About the Author
Dr. Kaoru Tsujii is one of the pioneers and leaders in science and technology of the surfactants. He has long explored the field covering both theory andindustrial applications. Tsujii received both his Master of Science degree and his Ph.D. from Osaka University. He has been employed by Kao Corporation, a leading manufacturer of consumer products in Japan, since 1970, where he is currently a Research Fellow. His areas of research include ididescent solutions resulting from periodic structure of bilayer membranes, super water- and oil-repellent surfaces utilizing their fractal structure, hybrid polymer gels with bilayer membranes, and interactions of surfacants with polymer gels. Dr. Tsujii has published over 50 papers and has authored 14 books and chapters. He has applied for 76 patents.

Simply beautiful

These designs are some of the most beautiful I've seen. Such graceful movement and flow. I love the way the artist uses colored wire. Reminds me of the illustrations in the Book of Kells. I haven't had a chance to read the tutorials yet, but the designs, for all their beauty, look as though they will be relatively simple to reproduce. This book was worth the price just to get to look at the pictures, but I can't wait to get started on a project or two.

Jig Patterns galore!

I simply love this book. It shows you how to make links out of wire such as for bracelets or watch bands. Also it has a section which is my favorite near the back of the book. This section has many different Jig patterns. It is great for people like me who bought a really nice jig made out of stainless and all over the place on the internet I see patterns for the wig-jig. I bought this jig out of personal preference. And it is nice to see that I don't have to buy the wig-jig just to get the patterns. I also recommend the book "Making Bead & Wire Jewelry" by Dawn Cusick. She has even more jig patterns at the back of her book.

EXCELLENT book that is worth having if you LOVE wireworking!

I am relatively new to wireworking and found this book to have both simple and more complex ideas, so there is something for everyone. I found some great new things to try and the instructions were clear and easy to follow. It also sparked my own creativity to try some variations once I saw how it was done. DEFINITELY a great book for beginners and more experienced designers alike.

The book examines the various aspects of clinical epidemiology. It is a good book for medical practicioners. It takes some effort to transcribe many of the concepts in the book to concepts used in standard epidemiology. All in all it is a good book if one is willing to spend the time.

Such a good book

I actually forgot that I had sold this book, but I shouldn't have. This book is labelled that is pertains to writing and writing instruction. This book is really heavily laden with argument theory, but entirely in a good way. Crosswhite is able to relate the need for more thorough instruction of argument theory into college level writing curriculum, for good reason, and it does this very well. However, for someone new to argument theory, or appreciative of the dynamism the rhetorical discipline has to offer, Crosswhite's book is a powerful, indispensable work that enfolds argument theory into the larger field of rhetoric. This book should be required reading for all instructors and students entering the broad-spectrumed rhetorical discipline, and for anyone interested in the wealth of argument strategies that encompass out lives at the conventional, academic, scholarly, and professional levels.

We need more on the Rhetoric of Reason

There is a need for more appreciation of the role of argument (debate, the dialectic) in creating knowledge and thus in the education process. Do not confuse argument with quarrel, nor think knowledge only comes from empirics or logical thinking.
James Crosswhite's book is a must for anyone interested in education, in particular how the dialectic process educates. I was interested in the book becuase I teach postgrads research methods for social inquiry. I learnt a lot.
Professor Crosswhite has a good philosophy background which he applies to clearly exlain how argument works and enables good (scientific) writing in essays, reports, or thesis.

fascinating!

Absorbing contemporary account of the militant arm of the women's suffrage movement in Great Britain. This book reads easily and held my interest throughout. I had to look up some of the references to people and events but did not feel that detracted from my experience of reading this book. I found my sympathetic reaction to Mrs. Pankhurst's justifications for advocating property damage disturbing as I am normally opposed to violence as a means of political expression. I was relieved to read that the group took pains to avoid injuring people. I hope that is true although I am sure that unintended injuries must have resulted from some of their activities. Overall, I got to learn some history, a window into Mrs. Pankhurst's views, experiences and values and a sense of what it felt like to live in that time. I was also challenged to look at my own values. The Kindle edition that I read was free so the only cost to me was time: a very worthwhile investment.

Great manuscript!

I never expected to get the actual manuscript, corrections,remarks and all, when I bought this book. It's a copy of the original manuscript, warts and all. It's really good reading. Gives a true insight as to what she had to actually go through to help get women the vote.

Technical InformationThe BFIS-CA has benefited from more than 30 years of research with its predecessor scale, the Home Situations Questionnaire (Barkley, 1981), and the subsequent development of the BFIS-CA from it. It has also benefited from the development of a comparable rating scale for assessing impairment in adults: the Barkley Functional Impairment Scale (BFIS). Scores are obtained for 15 specific domains of major life activities, including relationships with parents, siblings, children in the neighborhood, and children at school; community activities; interactions with adults other than parents; school performance; self-care; money management; sports participation; and following rules, among other domains. Two broadband summary scores are computed for the Home-School mean impairment score (consisting of 9 domains) and the Community-Leisure mean impairment score (consisting of 6 domains). A total number of impaired domains score is also computed. These constitute the 18 primary scores. Eight additional questions provide further information on specific types of impairment related to friendships, community participation, sports, and educational performance and adjustment. The large normative sample ("N" = 1,800) is representative of the U.S. population in terms of region, ethnicity/race, gender, and employment status, based on the 2000 U.S. Census. Unlike other comparable rating scales, the normative sample was not filtered to exclude children receiving special education or psychiatric medications. ReliabilityReliability of the scores is quite satisfactory as evidenced by high internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha of .97 for entire scale, and .95 and .96 for the Home-School and Community-Leisure mean impairment scores, respectively) and by high test-retest reliability over a 3-5 week interval (.86 for the Home-School mean impairment score; .83 for the Community-Leisure mean impairment score; .87 for the number of impaired domains score). ValidityValidity of the scale scores is substantiated through high correlations with other rating scales of executive functioning and ADHD symptoms. Factor analysis also demonstrated a single broadband factor of impairment that comprises two narrower-band but interrelated dimensions of Home-School (work related) and Community-Leisure domains. Children and teens scoring high on the scale demonstrated impairment in separate measures of social unpopularity, community involvement, sports participation, teacher reports of behavioral or school performance problems, previous grade point average, and history of grade retention, suspension, or expulsion. Significant differences in BFIS-CA scores were demonstrated among children with and without various psychiatric, developmental, learning, and neurological diagnoses, as well as among children and teens receiving (or not receiving) various types of psychiatric, psychological, and educational treatment services. Russell A. Barkley, PhD, ABPP, ABCN, is Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Pediatrics at the Medical University of South Carolina. Dr. Barkley has published numerous books and more than 260 scientific articles and book chapters on ADHD, executive functioning, and childhood defiance. He is also the editor of the newsletter The ADHD Report. Dr. Barkley is well known for his pioneering research on ADHD in both children and adults. His rating scales are based on more than 16 years of research using prototypes of the scales, and are normed on large samples representative of the U.S. population. Dr. Barkley's latest book is Executive Functions: What They Are, How They Work, and Why They Evolved. His website is www.russellbarkley.org.

About the Author
Dr. J. Michael Hollas is a retired University lecturer with many years' teaching and research experience. 

He has written over 100 research papers. Prior to Modern Spectroscopy he published 3 books, Symmetry in Molecules (Chapman and Hall, 1972), High Resolution Spectroscopy 2.ed. (Wiley, 1998) and Basic Atomic and Molecular Spectroscopy (Royal Society of Chemistry, 2002).

Great Spectroscopy Textbook

I used this book for a graduate level spectroscopy class. It is fairly easy to read and contains a good amount of information for those working in spectroscopy research.
