Great Practical Handbook

As an electrical engineer who has been out of school for a few years, I found this book to be tremendously helpful in covering topics I either never really delved into or only took intro courses on. It provided excellent explanations on both data conversion concepts and the hardware used to realize them. I found the handbook's explanation of device parameter specifications to be incredibly useful, giving the knowledge needed to pick the right part for my job. They also have testing and analysis procedures for different elements and great example circuits. Great book. I definitely recommend it.

The bible of A-D conversion

If you're doing circuit and system design involving analog-digital conversion, you need this book. Packed with detailed information from the industry leader in converter chips. Lots of tips and information about typical problems and how to avoid them, including power supply noise, layout considerations, keeping the digital transients out of the analog signal chain (not to mention the inputs of the ADC), etc. A very practical and useful book for mixed-signal design engineers.

At last! A modern book on data conversion worthy to succeed our 1986 landmark Analog-Digital Conversion Handbook (3rd edition). The Data Conversion Handbook is based on the book, Analog-Digital Conversion, a comprehensive set of notes for a recent Analog Devices seminar series on data converters.

In a digital world, A/D and D/A conversion is essential to translate between analog real-world physical variables and the abstract 1s and 0s of digital processing. The book's nine chapter titles offer a hint of its breadth, as well as its orientation to practical designing with and use of converters: Data-converter history; Fundamentals of sampled-data systems; Data-converter architectures; Data-converter process technology; Testing data converters; Interfacing to data converters; Data-converter support circuits; Data-converter applications; and Hardware design techniques.

The first chapter, data-converter history, starts with the early 18th-century background in hydraulic water-metering systems in the Ottoman empire, then-when electricity came into use-from the 19th century telegraph era through the 1950s. The chapter then covers progress-decade-by-decade-in technology, circuitry, and applications of converters during the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Where relevant, historical contexts are also noted in some of the later chapters.

The second chapter, fundamentals of sampled-data systems, sets the stage for hardware design-discussing coding and quantizing, sampling theory, data-converter ac errors, general data-converter specifications, and definitions of specifications.

Chapter 3, data-converter architectures, discusses DAC architectures, ADC architectures, and sigma-delta converters. Although it concentrates on the most popular designs, it seeks not to neglect any significant approach. For example, among DACs it discusses the Kelvin divider (string DACs), thermometer (fully decoded DACs), binary-weighted DACs, R-2R DACs, segmented DACs, oversampling interpolating DACs, multiplying DACs, intentionally nonlinear DACs, counting pulsewidth-modulated (PWM) DACs, cyclic serial DACs, and "other low-distortion architectures"-and naturally, the sigma-delta converter section includes sigma-delta DACs.

The fourth chapter covers a wide range of data-converter process technologies, from the early vacuum-tube converters, through solid-state modular and hybrid converters, to bipolar, complementary-bipolar (CB), and CMOS integrated-circuit processes. Also covered are thin-film resistor and calibration processes; and there is a section on smart partitioning: optimizing performance, space, and cost by intelligent choice of process partitioning within a package.

Chapter 5 provides in-depth discussions of a wide variety of testing techniques for static and dynamic performance characteristics of DACs and ADCs. The following chapter, interfacing to data converters, has a major section devoted to analog interface considerations in driving ADC inputs. Other sections in this chapter include ADC and DAC digital interfaces (and related issues), buffering DAC analog outputs, data-converter voltage references, and sampling-clock generation.

Chapter 7, data-converter support circuits, discusses in depth such important analog auxiliary circuits as voltage references; low-dropout (LDO) linear regulator circuits; analog-, digital-, and video switches (including cross-point types) and multiplexers; and sample (track)-and-hold circuits.

The foregoing chapters, some 60% of the book, amount to a virtual appetizer for the banquet of tutorial material in the last two chapters: data-converter applications (Chapter 8) and hardware design techniques (Chapter 9). These two chapters amount to a practical course on design solutions and techniques that can enrich the portfolio of any designer, from the technician and recent graduate to the hardened systems engineer.

The wide-ranging coverage in Chapter 8 is apportioned among eight topics: precision measurement and sensor conditioning, multichannel data-acquisition systems, digital potentiometers, digital audio, digital video and display electronics, software radio and IF sampling, direct digital synthesis, and precision analog microcontrollers.

Finally, Chapter 9's 185 pages are in themselves essentially a textbook for the hardware designer. Its eight topical areas are labeled: passive components, pc-board design issues, analog power-supply systems, overvoltage protection, thermal management, EMI/RFI considerations, low-voltage logic interfacing, and breadboarding & prototyping. Chapter 9 is followed by a comprehensive subject index and an indexed listing of Analog Devices products mentioned in the book.

This book will be a valuable addition to the library of the student, the practicing circuit design engineer and technician, and anyone else who needs a good practical grasp of what is needed for a successful marriage between the analog and digital worlds.

I'm not sure how any reader who was paying attention could feel the book is in any way "deceptive": 1) The book is intended as a 50th anniversary companion to the original Full Spectrum, which covered the 1967-96 period in great detail. 2) The new book contains a page with instructions for those who don't own Full Spectrum to obtain a free PDF of the book to accompany the new volume, and 3) the new book has lengthy 50th anniversary sections on the top 50 figures in Flyers history, 50 greatest victories, 50 key moments, etc. that span the entire 50 years.
Together, Flyers at 50 along with Full Spectrum provide THE definitive history of the Flyers, season by season and viewed across the entire 50 seasons. Very well written and an excellent read!

You're not a TRUE fan of the Flyers unless you own this book...!

Warning....this book is HUGE....! Over 600 pages. However, if you want the definitive story of 50 years of Flyers hockey, this is place to go. Tons of color photographs and stories that only Jay could find. He got outstanding cooperation in writing this book and it shows in the pages inside.
A must have for any TRUE Flyers fan.

After reading Holy Blood, Holy Grail, this book looks like a kid's atempt to explain something but not knowing exactly what he must explain. To much of personal belief are embeded here, personal attacks to whatever doesn't agree with the writer are everywhere in this book. The book cannot be taken seriously due to the nature in wich his author wrote it.

I had the greatest expectations about reading the book, but it's really a complete dissapointment. Conclusions are so obvious that can be done at the first pages- The Sion Priorate it's an invention of Mr. Placard-. If you're looking for something in the Da Vinci Code line, DON'T buy this book, it's a waste of money.

Although the content of this book derives from Miracle Coaching sessions held in 2010, the message is still relevant today in 2016. Unlike the previous two volumes, this volume has the author presenting more with less Q & A sessions. This helps to cut down on the repetition present in Volumes 1 and 2. If you are interested in changing your mindset or maximizing your living in the moment, then I believe you will benefit from reading this book.

P.F. Kelly is an associate professor of physics at Ave Maria University in Florida. He previously held a faculty position at North Dakota State University and he undertook post-doctoral studies at the Center for Theoretical Physics, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and at the Winnipeg Institute for Theoretical Physics, University of Winnipeg. A wonderful read for amateur history buffs as well as academics

The twentieth-century history of Germany is well known by casual readers of history--but how did that very important nation come into existence? David Blackbourn's History of Germany, 1780-1918 answers that question dramatically and with eloquence. His book was written for serious students and, I'd assume, fellow academics, but Blackbourn employs a wonderful narrative sweep that will also grab the interest of non-specialists like me. It's all here--the separate Germanic kingdoms and their very different responses to decades of revolution that erupted largely from out of neighboring France between the 1780s and 1848, the formation and expansion of a modern unified nation during the time of Bismarck, events leading to World War I, the disorder that followed the war, the Hohenzollern dynasty's fall, and the founding of the ill-fated Weimar Republic. There is plenty of rich social and cultural history here, too--the rise of Berlin and Germany's other major cities, as well as the importance of the German industrialists, artists, philosophers, and composers who have left their mark on all of Western civilization. David Blackbourn brings this big story vividly to life in a book that both academics and amateur history buffs can enjoy.

A tremendously competent piece of research, which portrays and measures wave after wave of social change. For example Blackbourn shows the rise of women in public service vocations, which quickly surpassed the numbers of clergymen or members of religious orders. By the 1880s and 90s their efforts generated whole new industries in previously unvalued "welfare" work -- mother and child welfare, campaigns to eradicate tuberculosis and venereal disease, to raise awareness about nutrition or implement standards for sanitation and housing. In Germany, F�rsorge (welfare) became a catchword for a hundred newly popular initiatives to "improve" people's lives and relations.

Blackbourn captures the kinds of news that mattered more than the same old political and military contests.

a. The economic development of Germany from an agricultural to a strong industrial economy
b. The emergence of Prussia as the leading German province leading to the unification of the nation in 1871 following the victory over France at the Battle of Sedan.
c. Social trends are detailed as Germany moves to a sophisticated modern state.
d. The rise of Prussian militarism is detailed as Bismarck the Iron Chancellor makes Germany a nation to be reckoned with in the world economy and arms race.
e. We see the rise of industrialism and the growth of large industries in coal, steel and iron manufacture.
f. The rise of anti-Semitism, imperialism and racism are chronicled.
g. Religion is important in this period with Catholic-Protestant hostility seen as well as religion conflicts with the government. The rise of modern biblical scholarship begins in the German universities.

About the Author

Daniel S. Parrott teaches navigation, seamanship, and Bridge Resource Management at Maine Maritime Academy and sails aboard the academy’s training ships State of Maine and schooner Bowdoin. Parrott holds a U.S. Coast Guard license for Master of Oceans, Motor, Steam, and Auxiliary Sail, 1600 tons; and a Second Mate unlimited license for Merchant Ships. He has accumulated more than 25 years of worldwide seagoing experience. Parrott is the author of Tall Ships Down: The Last Voyages of the Pamir, Albatross, Marques, Pride of Baltimore, and Maria Asumpta.

Excellent for single person watchstanding and much more than the usual BRM fare

This is THE book for small ship BRM. So much more than the usual "Areas of Responsibility" and "Make sure to communicate your intentions" stuff that is taught in most BRM courses. On my last small ship, we had single person watchstanders and I asked all the mates and ABs to read this book and discuss each chapter with me as they finished. At first I was met with skepticism, but by the time they were done, even the old timer 2nd Mate was glad that he had read it. And more importantly, he incorporated some of the suggestions into his watchstanding, which meant I slept better at night when he was on watch.

Important read for 100 and 200 ton captains

If you have a 200 ton to 500 ton this is a welcome addition to the industry. Most books and manuals on Bridge Resource Management are written for ships. With only 225 ships registered in the USA, there is a real need to tailor Bridge Resource Management for the tens of thousands of smaller vessels that operate in the USA. The book is well written, an easy read, packed with useful information for small vessel deck officers. I use it in my school, Kennedy Point Maritime School. (www.kpmaritime.org). I like this book. Most deck officers - Captains with 100 ton licenses have never had a class in Bridge Resource Management. There are a number of important considerations presented in this book to aid Captains to stay out of trouble. Basically, don't cut corners. Do everything by the book.

Good book

As a tugboat captain on San Francisco Bay,who had never taken a Bridge Resource Management class, when I saw this book reviewed in one of the professional journals I thought it might be a good lens to review some of my routine practices through. I have been favorably impressed by this work.
It is very well written, quite readable. Capt. Parrott injects just a touch of appropriate humor at places about a very serious subject. He gives very understandable descriptions of various maritime accidents to illustrate the various principles of BRM. More than providing answers, I feel its value is in the questions it raises.
I have suggested to my employer that they provide it to all the captains in our company. I would recommend it to any small vessel professional or even any serious recreational boater.
